Book Description

January 31, 2005

A photographic portrait of Japan today.

Modern Japan, the second largest economy in the world, is a land of contradictions. Home to some of the most sophisticated technology and manufacturing, it also has communities whose daily life has changed little in the last five hundred years. It is a land of great beauty, both in the landscape and in its celebrations, festivals, and traditional arts. After photographing China, Korea, and the United States, Hiroji Kubota spent three years traveling the length and breadth of Japan's many islands, capturing the magnificent diversity of his own country. From rice paddies to pachinko parlors, ancient temples to the Honda assembly plants, Kobota's lens has captured both the ordinary and the extraordinary. 185 full-color photographs

This review is from: Japan (Hardcover)
Hiroji Kubota takes the reader on a wonderful visual feast of Japan. His photos cover all aspects of Japanese life, from the very ancient to the very modern. The captions for the photos are at the back with an accompanying black and white print of the photo.
A beautiful coffee table book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking and authentic photos of Japan, July 8, 2008
This review is from: Japan (Hardcover)
These photos cover so many facets of daily life in Japan. I traveled through Japan last year, even visiting a few of the places depicted in the book, and these photos evoked the same kind of emotion I had while being there. From the sumptious food and diverse culture to the juxtaposing of modern and ancient Kubota captures it all. If you love or are fascinated with Japan, then you will not be disappointed with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essence of Japan, May 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Japan (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful photography book. The places just come alive through the sometimes carefully and sometimes candidly photographed images. Mr. Kubota truly devoted himself when doing this project. This book really captures the essence of the Japanese nation: The face of that old lady selling seafood in mid winter, the forest around an ancient Buddhist monastery, a family gathered for dinner... Every single image in this book delights. Japanophiles and travel photography collectors: This is a must have.
