WHOEVER INVENTED THIS MOLD IS SIMPLY BRILLIANT ! BRAVO ! KUDOS ! XOXOXOX !
This mold is the epitomy of perfection, at a price and ease of use that is incomparable.

The only reason I am reviewing this is because I am SO pleased. I am back here ordering 2 more for myself + ordering 3 for gifts.

If you are considering buying this mold, just READ THE DIRECTIONS. So what if they are in Japanese, the pictures are totally instructive !

Evan wrote: Works pretty well, but is fiddly.

RUBY :: no, it isn't fiddly at all.

My method is to snap the molds shut and then fill from the top hole

RUBY :: Read the directions. Fill the ENTIRE bottom mold, then press the top mold
into the bottom mold, all the excess water is automatically removed. That's it !

Once they are frozen, run some water over the mold and you'll be able to crack the mold open.

RUBY :: Geez ! Take mold out of freezer, let it sit on the counter for 10-20 min.
They just fall out perfectly round.

If you don't allow for expansion, the ice balls will have a lot of cloudy cracks in them

RUBY :: The little hole on the top is there for precisley that purpose, as it freezes, excess water is pushed out into the top mold.

(I use filtered water, so I'm pretty sure these are pressure cracks caused by expansion).

RUBY :: If you want perfectly crystal clear balls, BOIL THE WATER for 10 minutes, let cool, then fill the entire bottom mold. Or use DISTILLED water.

You can make them up in advance and store the ice balls in your freezer for use later.

RUBY :: YESSIREEE ! There are 12 ice balls in a zip bag in my freezer.

I've had this for about 1-2 weeks, and it is great. Like (I assume) most people on here, I wanted large ice cubes for rocks drinks, like whiskey. I wanted something that would both be really fancy looking and have the benefit of melting slower because of the improved surface area/volume ratio. I've been seeing giant cubes popping up at local trendy bars and enjoyed them in that setting, so I thought I could copy the same at home. I also bought the Tovolo giant cube tray, which is a fun change of shape - though technically not as good for its surface-to-volume ratio as a spherical piece of ice.

There seem to be a lot of different designs ball shaped ice trays, I got this one because I could see how it was going to work (and did n't think the design was going to be problematic) and the reviews were good. Having used it, it works great! You just over fill the bottom tray, put on the top, and press the pieces together to squeeze out the excess water. There are holes in the top for this purpose and to allow a place to the water to expand while freezing.

My only criticism is the material. It is plastic, but seems kind of brittle - it does not appear to have the same combination of strength and flexibiltiy that normal plastic ice trays do. However, this should not be a problem. To prevent cracking, I am careful not to over-twist the tray to get this ice out, instead opting for running warm water to release them. I also think it is overpriced. Ten bucks for an ice tray? I chose to buy it anyway though, and I'm happy with the performance so far.

I liked this item so much I ordered a second one. I was a little skeptical initially that round ice would do any better in my drink than regular ice cube. I am a believer now though. My drink stays cold and since the ice-ball melts slower, it does not water my drink down as fast. My only complaint is that the two pieces do not lock together - which I solved using a couple rubber bands to keep the two halves snug and the ice balls nearly perfect little spheres.

This tray is perfect! And easy to use! I did read through a lot of the reviews before I bought and remember seeing someone comment about problems filling it and suggesting to fill it through the holes on the top. The holes are really small so I don't see that as an option unless you're really patient. However, it is so simple, just fill the bottom up, place on the top which displaces the water from the bottom and forces the excess out of the holes on the top, and stick in the freezer. I do cover the holes with my fingers and dump off the excess water first, but not sure that would be necessary.

It does help to run some warm water on the outside of the tray to remove the cubes easier. The spheres look great and last so much longer than others. This tray only makes three, but we just transfer to a bag and remake so when we are using them, we have a bag of ice balls available.

A lot of fun to use for mixed drinks with friends. I don't see any downside with this product.

This is a "cool product. The spheres do last amazingly long compared to regular sized ice cubes. At the same time, whenever I serve drinks with the spheres to someone for the first time, they always find them amusing and clever. I like this thing.

This "made in Japan" ice tray does make spherical ice balls, however you must follow the directions and use some ingenuity. As noted, you fill up one tray, push the other tray over that and the excess water releases. After freezing, sometimes the ice balls have a tendency to break along the seam, or otherwise. So you have to count on having some fail - it isn't 100% fool-proof.
