Book Description

Architectural Design Profile February 1994
This third issue in the Japanese Architecture series continues to investigate the ongoing trends that are appearing in this fluctuating, high-tech, information society. From automobiles to office towers and pocket size DAT (Digital Audio Tapes) as well as first world economy, the architecture is assessed within this vibrant framework. The innovative generation of architects brought up in this industrialized society are examined, for example Itsuko Hasegawa, Shin Takamatsu, alongside those architects of a previous generation whose work has become an integral part of Japanese society, for example the 1960s "Metabolism" movement typified in the work of Kisho Kurokawa. Their work, juxtaposed in this issue, reveals the contrasts and similarities of the architects practising within and out of Tokyo. In the Kumamoto Artpolis we see the ideas and practices of the local authority (prefecture) and its desire for a localized design integrated with many variants for diversity as different architects were chosen to work on specific projects. Individual architects are also examined giving an in-depth and revelatory insight into the society. This is a key text for an understanding of Japanese architecture, society and philosophy and is presented in a lively way, with lavish illustrations of the projects. The text investigates a society that is an integral part of an economic and design orientated, high-tech society with potential consequences for the West. It includes the edited transcripts of the "Learning from Tokyo" International Forum held at the Royal Academy, London in June 1993.
