I saw this movie, with several friends, in a crowded theater in California. This movie will give you nightmares! It is the most shocking, horrifying movie ever made! Let me tell you about the audience that saw it with me. By the end of the film, almost everyone was in shock. Many were crying and in tears. A friend of mine who is a journalist, told me she began having nightmares after watching it. This movie is not for the faint hearted. All the pictures and film clips are archival, and most were taken by the Japanese. This is truly shocking stuff. It does not get more real than this. As to the background music, I have only this to say: Bravo!

I teach a class on the Chinese revolution, 1911-1949. One of the topics I cover is Japan's invasion of China in 1937, which includes the atrocities committed in Nanking in December 1937. If the saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words is true," then it was not necessary for me to lecture on the event; all I needed to do was to show the video to my students. We were all numb after watching the video. It took a while for us to regain our composure before discussing this episode in China-Japan relations.

This film takes you back in time, making you feel as if you are right there. The images and pictures are graphic. A gore-fest, it is not. If you want buckets of blood, then look elsewhere. The sound track is truly wonderful, and the film-makers use the music and the pictures to really play with your emotions. I've also seen other documentaries about the Rape of Nanking, and this is truly the best. The film provides a historical context, explaining the mind-set of the Japanese and the events leading up to the massacre, and none of the other documentaries on this subject do that. The film also explains American government complicity in covering up the crimes of the Japanese, and no other film does that either. If you want to really understand the Rape of Nanking, what took place and why, this is the film for you.

A documentary about a horrifying tragedy which really, truly, explains what happened and why it happened. As revealed in this film, the Japanese believed their emporer was a god. Since he was a god, it was his divine right to rule the world, including all the White races. The Japanese thought the Chinese were subhumans and they wanted to conquer China to exploit its resources, because they wanted to rule the world including America. Remember Pearl Harbor? Japanese school children were taught to hate, maim, and kill non-Japanese, and Japanese soldiers were ordered to rape and torture and kill innocent people. They were given killing practice in Nanking and taught to burn, stab, rape, and torture Chinese, Filipinos, Russians, and Americans. The Japanese even filmed and took pictures of their crimes, and these pictures are reproduced in this film. Unlike all other documentaries on this subject, this film provides a historical context and puts everything in perspective.

I was depressed for quite a while by the movie.
I am wondering how can Japanese deny it in front of all these evidences!

The Rape of Nanking has been viewed over 16 million times world wide, there are over 30,000 comments posted, it was ranked in the "Top 10 Most Discussed Films of All Time" for much of 2007, and even people working for a competing film maker have declared, this film, The Rape of Nanking" is the best film ever made on this tragedy.

Employing archival material, the Rape of Nanking begins with a historical overview of ancient China and Nanking, including rare film-footage of Nanking and its citizens before the attack. The Rape of Nanking next explains the mind-set of Japan, Bushido (the Way of the Warrior), and the belief in an Emperor-god who was destined to rule the world. This documentary proceeds to the attack on Shanghai, followed by the raping, plundering, and murders committed on the road to Nanking. Also explored, how intrigues and betrayals within China's Nationalist government contributed to the massacre. There follows the massacre with lengthy sequences devoted to the raping, torture, beheadings, bayonnetting, burning, and killing of nearly 280,000 Chinese men, women, children, and babies. The Rape of Nanking is by far the most popular, most talked about, and most recommended film ever made on this tragedy, with an estimated viewership of over 16 million, over 30,000 comments posted online in America, ranked in the Top 10 Most Discussed Films of All Time (2007), and praised by China Central TV, the People's Daily, World Journal, Beijing Youth Daily, Global Times, China Youth Daily, Xinhau (China News Agency), and numerous other media outlets in China. "The whole world should see this movie" (Sing Tao).

OK: I'm biased. I know the producer. But here is what you don't know. This film is hosted by Google. Nearly 2000 independent websites have embedded this film in their website for the pleasure of their viewers, giving it a rank of 149 out of hundreds of thousands of film at Google. According to Google stats, this film is downloaded over 250,000 times a day!!! Over 50 articles have appeared in the Chinese media praising this film. It has been repeatedly shown to standing-room only audiences who are typically left in shock and tears. It is an emotionally powerful film. The editor at Sina.com reviewed this film and wrote that "the whole world should see this movie." An editor at World Journal wrote: "Powerful, shocking, thought provoking."

Nor is this film Chinese propaganda. The film-maker is not Chinese and he is not associated with any Chinese groups or the Chinese government. His last film was about Hitler, and CBS called it "mesmerizing."

So why the bad review from the person pretending to be from Hong Kong? Listen: The producers of this film have been threatened and harrassed. Certain people have put a lot of money and a lot of effort into trying to sabotage this film, including a rival film-maker, and this is because it is the best film out there. They have tried to destroy and sabotage this film, because it threatens them. They do not want you to know the truth. They do not want you to see a great film, the best on the subject.

This is a powerful film. One need not take my word for it. The published reviews and the stats from Google prove it. A quarter million people a day download this film. It is hosted by nearly 2000 independent websites.

I watched a similar documentary on the same subject when I was 14. I was horrified. I was behind of my fingers for the whole film. Today, I watched the same subject and fell into deep thinking. With all the proofs in the films, why some many people still keep blindly denying. I guess they are really shamed of what their ancestors did. They should be.

This documentary tells the world what happened in the city of Nanking during the Japanese invasion. Everyone deserves to know the truth. The dvd comes in with English on side A and Chinese on side B, highly recommended.

This documentary showed nothing but the darkest side of human history. More horrible than Auschwitz Concentration Camp in efficiency, and larger in scale of genocide.

A permanent shame to all human species, but perticularly to Japanese education failure.
