Product Description

Size:4" Pot

ORNAMENTAL GRASSES: Grasses provide structure and texture to your garden, offering many shapes, heights and colors. Most will "bloom' with attractive seed fronds that move with the breeze.

Commonly known as Japanese Bloodgrass, 'Red Baron' is a clump-forming, ornamental grass that features erect, thin blades. The upper half of each blade turns a garnet red in summer with the red colour often deepening toward burgundy as the growing season progresses. This grass remains attractive until late autumn and then goes dormant in winter. It is useful in borders, rock gardens or as a colourful accent. Its foliage colour can be superb when backlit by early morning or late day sun. 'Red Baron' is also good for patio containers or tubs. Hardy in zones 5-9. Plant in sun or partial shade. Grows 12-24 inches tall. Plant 12 inches apart.

The plants are growing in 4" pots and contain multiple plants. Shipped dormant in the winter.

I've purchased ornamental grass before and generally it comes in a clump (much like any potted plant would look). When my Japanese Blood Grass arrived, to my surprise I was sent a pot with ONE INDIVIDUAL BLADE OF GRASS IN IT!!!!!!! What a waste of my money!! What a scam!

This plant just arrived yesterday and I was eagerly waiting in excitement.

Sadly, it came dried and dead. The little grass it came with was brown and crunchy.
Very disappointed.

I ordered 10 Japanese Blood Grasses. The plants were shipped quickly and packed in good shape but was very disappointed in genreal with the condition of the plant it self. There really wasn't much of a plant in each pot. Hopefully when I plant them they will prove my opinion to be wrong.

After much searching I finally found someone willing to sell Japanese Bloodgrass, as it's considered a nuisance weed in many southern states (I'm in Zone 5b).
In regards to the seller (Hirt's Gardens) I compared their total price on Amazon to their website's total price and despite the plant price being the same I saved a fair number of dollars on the shipping charge by ordering direct from them.

I ordered two plants on May 6th, they shipped May 7th and I received them May 9th. I received two one gallon nursery pots each with a large full clump of Bloodgrass (between 4 to 6 inches tall). It was packaged securely and the pots were covered so no dirt fell out.

Due to changes in my landscaping schedule I still (as of June 2nd) have not removed them from the nursery pots. I added some mulch and watered them every other day since I got them and lucky for me they are thriving quite well. They are now between 8 and 10 inches tall and look gorgeous. I look forward to ordering more.

***UPDATE***
The two I had first bought were removed from their pots and planted in their final raised areas. They thrived and got larger than I thought they would (over 14 inches). I had bought five more (again directly from Hirt's Gardens), planted them in raised beds matching the first two and they too have survived quite well. Three exposed to sun all day, three exposed to mostly sun, one exposed to partly sun. It's coming time to trim them down for the fall and I look forward to seeing them next spring.

The ornamental grasses that I purchased add fantastic color to any garden. Hirt's Gardens packaged them in pots, with styrofoam balls and enough space to breathe, I was impressed. I planted them right away and they took off. Excellent nursery....

Do you see this beautiful picture? Be ready, you are not getting anything like that!!! One order consists of one tired looking stem.
I would not recommend it to anyone!!!!

The plants arrived quickly and well preserved. I followed the planting instructions and all are living and growing. This company had these plants long after many other nurseries were out. I am well pleased with this company's service.

This was not the fault of the seller completely nor was anything wrong with the plant. The grass arrived at my house about a week after I ordered it which was awesome, but, upon doing some research on how to care for the grass (new to gardening here) I found out that it was illegal to grow in the state of Georgia as well as Alabama, Florida, and S. Carolina. The seller was very understanding and agreed to give me a full refund which I also received in about a week. My only complaint was that they didn't even know that it is illegal in some states. I guess maybe some sort of note in the description stating to check with your local extension office before purchasing this grass would have helpful.
