Granted, it's a bit pricey for the relatively scant info that it delivers. There are much better and infinitely more detailed books out there nowadays, but it's still a nice piece for something written so long ago... and by one of the premier Japanese aviation experts of all time! It's good to finally own this out-of-print book and add it to my Osprey collection.

1.0 out of 5 stars Japanese Carrier Air Groups 1941-1945, June 15, 2009

This review is from: Japanese Carrier Air Groups 1941-1945 (Osprey Airwar 21) (Paperback)
Were this a book about American Carrier Air Groups from 1941-1945, one would expect a discussion of carrier airwing or air group composition in terms of aircraft squadrons and types of aircraft assigned, times assigned, and operational histories, with additional information about squadron commanders and other notable personnel as well as ship and aircraft types and characteristics. Those who are looking for the World War II Japanese Navy equivalent of the above will be badly disappointed by this book, which is principally a brief and indifferently rendered history of the carrier war in the Pacific.

While the book does discuss the major aircraft types employed by the Japanese Navy during the war, there is almost no detail on carrier air group composition--the collections of aircraft that flew from specific ships at specific times--beyond providing the total number of aircraft by type embarked onboard Japanese carriers (or carrier divisions) at the beginning of various operations. For example, while Francillon notes how many aircraft of each type and model were assigned to each of the three Japanese carrier groups at the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, he does not break that number down by ship. What is more, these numbers (and the rest of the text) are entirely unsupported by references, which (given the lack of consistency on this subject among other sources) calls into question the accuracy of that little which is provided.

This book would more accurately be entitled Japanese Carrier Aircraft 1941-1945. Even if it were, however, it would not be worth buying. A used copy of Francillon's far more thorough Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War (ISBN 0-370-30251-6) can easily be bought for less than the $50 this book was selling for at the time of my writing, and as it is held by many to be the definitive resource on the subject its excellence only serves to illuminate the shortcomings of Japanese Carrier Air Groups 1941-45.
