5.0 out of 5 stars Useful and Interesting Volume April 14, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
There has not been a volume like this that works well for college classroom use. Previous edited volumes have discussed many films that are not available with subtitles and not the most common choices for college classrooms. The essays here are interesting, of reasonable length, and about films that are the staple of the North American Japanese film survey course. The short but content rich essays leave room for instructors to combine those readings with their other favorites on a given film, readings from Donald Richie, or theoretical works of note. It will be important for Routledge to keep it at a reasonable price so that it remains available for classroom use. For some time, this, along with Donald Richie's book, will be the staples of the Japanese cinema survey in North America.
