If you're looking for a vocabulary tool, it's great.

Hiragana knowledge is essential, since you only will have kanji and katakana for words, and romaji.

I definitely recommend this book for learners of Japanese.

Like other "dictionaries" in this series, this is a very useful collection of everyday vocabulary. It is not really a dictionary proper, but rather a vocabulary builder of sorts. It is especially useful for intermediate and advanced students who have a strong command of grammar but need to build a rich, functional lexicon for everyday life. The basic vocabulary for science, health, and the natural environment is especially useful, and it is exactly this sort of vocabulary that textbooks -- even advanced books -- usually lack. Words like walrus, sea horse, stratosphere, and granite may seem inconsequential, but every native English speaker would know them, and if you ever want real functional fluency in Japanese (or any foreign language), you MUST know this sort of vocab in that language. This is one of the only books I know that is organized thematically and brings thousands of these kind of words together in one place. The thematic organization makes it MUCH easier than simply trying to read through a traditional English-Japanese dictionary, whose entries are of course arranged alphabetically. Portable, comprehensive, highly useful, and fun -- definitely a good investment!

This is a great visual dictionary, which a fantastic way to learn words by association. However, some of the more complicated Kanji is so small that it is hard to make out, to the point where you have to use a magnifying glass or squint to see some of the more higher stroke kanji. I wish the book was bigger so that the kanji is clearer and easy to read. And yes, I have 20/20 vision.

Try seeing the book in Amazon via the Look Inside button. Scroll through the pages, and see if you can discern the complicated kanji WITHOUT using the Zoom button, at its original size. That's what it's like in real life.

The book is awesome! Essential for beginners. Contains more then all that is needed for a strong basic.
Hiragana knowledge is essential, since you only will have kanji and katakana for words, and romaji.
If you intend to learn only to speak, then don't hesitate it's really a good stuff.

I bought three different visual dictionaries this was the first one I bought then is was McGraw-Hill's Japanese Illustrated Dictionary and The Oxford-Duden Pictorial Japanese and English Dictionary . I got to say this one is by far my favorite one is has a lot of pages and its small size not like the full size books and it has actual pictures real pictures not like the other two I bought that are just illustrations. This books also has the font and size where it's so easy to read not like the oxford pictorial Japanese English dictionary that one has small font and size that makes is hard for me to actually read it. All things you need are right in this book great for beginners written in English and Japanese (kanji, katakana and hiragana) great practice for reading and writing also I highly recommend this book!!!

This is a useful tool for building vocabulary, but it's not exactly a dictionary. Many important words are missing. The book is composed primarily of nouns, with a few hard-to-find verbs sprinkled in. There are very few other parts of speech, for interrogative words are missing. There is a useful reference section in back with common phrases and a handful of more abstract words.

If you're looking for a vocabulary tool, it's great. If you're looking for a dictionary, there are better choices.

Well, during many years I studied the Chinese language. Today, moving my residence I had time to think of the Chinese vocabulary I have - (called by the japanese people has Kanji) - what means Chinese letters ( actually words ). Then I compared my Han Zi ( Kanji ) and discovered I could understand many of them and decided to jump to japanese language - at least a little... Throughout Amazon I discovered this book - plus the 'Japanese through Manga'. Both perfect for my intentions as a beginner! Visual bilingual I already new for I have the chinese-english one. Excellent! But my surprise was with the ' Manga's one"> terrific! They discovered a way of teaching the hard japanese grammar in a light way. Wisely an very, very professionally: not scaring students with many many conjugations and grammar terms, etc. No! All is little by little explained in a friendly way. > As for the Visual I believe everyone that want to have a japanese word - without having to search in a dictionary every moment - it is wonderful, for through well printed photos you can have any subject with the japanese way of writing, since the sillabary hiragana, katakana and the beautiful kanjis until the soft touch of a brilliant paper. I too would love to have the "search inside" of it...but.........Now I see it was worth buying such a good companion ( both the books: The japanese-english bilingual Visual dictionary and the Japanese the Manga Way) Perfect for a japanese language beginner! Buy and learn! Believe me:learn laughing.

The DK Japanese-English Visual Dictionary was one of the two books I referred to most for assisting with communications during a recent three week trek across Japan (the other was the "Lonely Planet Japanese Phrasebook and Dictionary.") I had previously used the DK French-English Visual Dictionary with great success and this book contains essentially identical photographs from the French volume, but obviously labeled with the English and Japanese terms for everything from lacrosse (rakurosu) to insect repellent (mushiyoke,) and everything in between. This also makes for a fun vocabulary builder to browse through things that you are interested and study the words associated with that theme. The book does have some pronunciation tips and some directions for quirks specific to the Japanese-English version of this dictionary, but this is a dictionary and not a phrasebook. If you want a phrasebook, this is not your best choice, but if you want an easily accessible dictionary that has most any word your may ever need as a tourist (and then some) grouped into sensible thematic sections this is indispensable. One of the great things about the book is that when you are all out of ideas about how to communicate, opening the book and pointing to what you want is hugely effective (I used this technique in several giant department stores in both Tokyo and Hiroshima, with great results.) It's not sophisticated or elegant, but it works. When I go back to Japan, I will definitely be taking this back with me.
