Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I am a Japanese language learner, so I designed the layout of this book in a way that makes it easy for learners to use. I actually had been using another dictionary which was fine- but it didn't display the phonetic reading front and center, Half the words I look up, I do so because I want to make certain of the reading.

I also wanted to be able to look up words within the dictionary itself. The examples given in the other dictionary were sometime too difficult for me, as a learner, to read or make use of. Now, when I encounter a new word in an example sentence, I can click on it to look it up.
I hope this format helps you as dive in to the world of Reading Japanese!

Great new tool for me to use! I found it to be fast, good coverage / based on JMDICT, I can look up words in the dictionary itself. It's the least expensive Japanese English dictionary with a nice layout designed for learners

However, it doesn't work as a dictionary on the color kindles. But that's not the fault of this dictionary. Users just aren't allowed to change the primary dictionary. It WILL work on all the iOS devices (iPad), and it works on my iPad mini Kindle app, so I'm a happy camper.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good dictionary. May 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Unlike some of the other J-E dictionaries available for the Kindle, this one has a basic understanding of grammar, so that if you highlight an inflected form in a text, the dictionary will often recognize it properly. For example, 扱われる brings up 扱う, 読んで brings up 読む, 合わせた brings up 合わせる, etc. It is based on the Breen/EDICT dictionary, so the coverage is quite good, although (since that dictionary is a work in progress) that also means that it inherits any weaknesses of its source. At $1.95 it's a very good value.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful tool August 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I am a Japanese learner and think this will be useful for me. covers most of what I need. Good that it is based on JMDICT (EDICT). Also, I can check word meanings in the example sentences.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't seem to work with old non-touch Kindles October 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Correct me if I'm wrong (please do, I'd love for this to function properly!), but it doesn't seem to work at all on my old keyboard-based Kindle.
Usually, I put my text marker in front of a word and the (english-english) dictionary explains the word automatically.
Having this J/E dictionary assigned as my primary dictionary, absolutely nothing happens when I put the marker
before a word, nor when I mark the word (by pressing the middle button at the beginning of the word and again at
the end).

And yes, I have ensured that the metadata of the epub I'm trying to read is set to 'Japanese'.

I can manually search through the dictionary on my own, and that seems to be functional at least, but I don't know
how to type Japanese characters on my kindle, so I can't look up anything without flipping pages.

These two problems renders the product completely useless for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars PC Kindle user: I was not able to get this to work June 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I returned this because it was nonfunctional for my PC Kindle application.

Given the other reviews, it must be working for somebody or maybe the real Kindle, but that wasn't my use case.
