Book Description

Over the past 40 years, Japanese designers have led the way in aligning fashion with art and ideology, as well as addressing identity and social politics through dress. They have demonstrated that both creative and commercial enterprise is possible in today's international fashion industry, and have refused to compromise their ideals, remaining autonomous and independent in their design, business affairs and distribution methods. The inspirational Miyake, Yamamoto and Kawakubo have gained worldwide respect and admiration and have influenced a generation of designers and artists alike.

Based on twelve years of research, this book provides a richly detailed and uniquely comprehensive view of the work of these three key designers. It outlines their major contributions and the subsequent impact that their work has had upon the next generation of fashion and textile designers around the world.

Designers discussed include: Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo, Naoki Takizawa, Dai Fujiwara, Junya Watanabe, Tao Kurihara, Jun Takahashi, Yoshiki Hishinuma, Junichi Arai, Reiko Sudo & the Nuno Corporation, Makiko Minagawa, Hiroshi Matsushita, Martin Margiela, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Walter Beirendonck, Dirk Bikkembergs, Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan and Helmut Lang.

Editorial Reviews

A comprehensive synthesis of the works and careers of the three Japanese designers who revolutionized the Western fashion world... This is a must read for anyone interested in Japanese fashion. Yuniya Kawamura, Associate Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology/State University of New York Bonnie English here condenses twelve years of research into a book which examines the emergence of the three leading Japanese fashion designers, Issey Miyake (b. 1938), Yohji Yamamoto (b. 1943) and Rei Kawakubo (b.1942), in the last quarter of the twentieth century... The text is very accessible and illustrated throughout with photographs of the clothes being discussed... 3.0 out of 5 stars Good info, well researched but flawed book. May 13, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is the perfect starting point if you want to do research on the japanese fashion/clothing designers and their work. It explains much not only about their work in general but also about their techniques and philosophies.

However, as the other reviewer pointed out, the book is flawed. My copy is missing pages 17-48 and substituted them with pages 81-112, which are again repeated in the order later on. This proved to be a major stepback in my research. I don't believe I can return the book as I already marked it with my notes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but flawed book January 31, 2012
Japanese Fashion Designers (the work and influence of Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, and Rei Kawakubo) is a nice book especially for the price. One MAJOR flaw is that each designer get a section of their own with a photo of the designer at the beginning of the chapeter, well Issey Miyake's is wrong. It's not a picture of Issey Miyake, but of Naoki Takizawa (a former Issey Miyake designer). It's sad that the writer/editor did NOT notice this. How you can NOT tell that the photo is not of Issey Miyake? Very idiotic!

Outside of that the book is pretty good with info on newer designers. One of my personal favorites being Tao Kurihara (sadly she does not have her own line, Tao, anymore. It also has wonderful sections on the Japanese influence on Dutch and Belgian designers.

I do recommend the book, but that mislabeled photo is a BIG BIG screw up!!!!
