The illustrations in this book are redrawn largely from figures and recreated historical costume in the Costume Museum of Japan (Kyoto), which is not noted in the text. Not only does the author commit egregious mistakes in attributing illustrated costumes to specific periods, the dates for periods that accompany the illustrations are not given. Nineteenth century examples hardly represent the tremendous changes is fashion that modernization brought about. Let my nine year-old color the pictures? Yes. Let him think it represents accurate period costume? Not on your life. Dover usually does much better than this.

Since I am not familiar with the history of Japanese fashions, I don't pay any attention to the accuracy of what is written at the bottom of each page. I can enjoy coloring this book just for the shear love of working with the complex designs and use of color this type of book provides. I love ALL of Ming Ju-Sun's work and am eagerly awaiting the release of her newest coloring book about Japanese kimonos!
