If I could have only one tool, this would be it. Dig, plant, divide, weed... it's a knife for all seasons. A thick, rugged blade digs through even tough clay and stones. A serrated edge saws through wicked roots. A narrow point makes neat work of nasty vines in walkway cracks. They'll have to pry my Hori-Hori knife from my cold, dead fingers some day! Just the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Hori-Hori
Seems a little cheaply made. Cheap sheath and the blade isn't sharp enough to cut anything

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonzai!, October 24, 2000
This review is from: Japanese Hori Hori Garden Landscaping Digging Tool With Carbon Steel Blade & Sheath (Lawn & Patio)
It has been three years and this is still my favorite garden tool.

When I saw the name I had to have this tool. Little did I know it would be the only one I would reach for when I gardened. I set out to plant 200 bulbs last weekend and ended up tossing my bulb planter and using this wonderful tool. It cut through roots, clay and uprooted rocks. I can hardly wait for Spring. Bonzai!

Digs any kind of holes in any kind of soil easily. Best dandelion digger in the world. I've lost two and replaced them as soon as I finished searching. Paint the handle red!

My FAVORITE garden tool. Super weeder/trowel. Stainless steel might be better as dirt sticks to carbon steel model; hard to clean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great yard and garden tool, July 13, 2005

These are great! I got one a few years ago after I broke a good strong trowel ... I can go out in the yard with it, and get work done for hours. Dig weeds, plant, divide clumps of plants, cut grass, whatever. Get one. Use it. Dig with the end. Cut with the straight side. The serrated side works well on grasses and roots. They're great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get the High Carbon Steel version, Great garden tool!, March 19, 2009

This review is from: Japanese Hori Hori Garden Landscaping Digging Tool With Carbon Steel Blade & Sheath (Lawn & Patio)
The amazon review says "Stainless steel" the description is "High Carbon Steel". The photo is of the High Carbon steel as is the item title. So get this one! I've had one for over 15 years and it's the first tool I grab when I'm out pulling up dandelions and buttercup. It's great for planting bulbs. It's not sharp enough to cut up bamboo roots but sawing through a lost maple tree root if small is possible. Mostly it replaced my trowel, because the blade is way stronger than the trowel was, the tip is stronger for digging up weeds and having the saw teeth on one side lets me hackout lost roots. Well worth the cost.

(don't get the stainless steel version, this one is the one you want.)

As simplistic as the tool is it is hard to imagine surviving a day in the garden without the Hori-Hori. Solidly constructed it will withstand any punishment you deliver. With its slightly concave blade it will penetrate the most stubborn soils and pry up the most tenacious weeds with ease. The serrated edge cuts any roots blocking its path. The opposite edge is smooth but not sharp which allows carefree handling. The sheath has a belt loop for convienent carrying. I have also uncovered a larger version of the Hori-Hori with a total length of 14 inches. However this 11 inch model has performed quite nicely in my garden. Perhaps a bit overpriced considering the inexpensive vinyl sheath provided to house the Hori-Hori but overall a worthwhile investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Favorite Gardening Tool, January 3, 2007

I received my first Hori Hori as a gift and wasn't sure what to do with it. Once I started using it for weeding and digging, I now can't work without it. I misplaced my first one and had to immediately buy another because I was lost in my garden without it. (I painted the handle of the second one to make it easier to locate.) I heard a radio interview with a person from the Cornell University Extension Program, and this tool was her top gardening tool as well. This is now one of my favorite gifts to give.

No self-respecting gardener should be without a Hori Hori knife. This knife replaced my first one and appears to be identical to that original. After many years of hard use, the wooden handle on my original gave out (the knife itself remained unscathed but unusable without its handle). Four stars instead of the maximum five is due to the very poor quality (and life) of the sheath. This one lasted 10 minutes before falling apart. I replaced the sheath with one of real leather.

Since receiving this tool, it sets right next to the back door. It's the first thing I pick up on the way to the garden and the last thing I lay down. It is FAR superior to the flimsy look-a-likes on the market. I really enjoy using it.
