5.0 out of 5 stars Sushi anyone?, August 11, 2001
This review is from: Japanese Inspirations: 18 Quilted Projects (That Patchwork Place) (Paperback)
Calling all quilters with a taste for the Orient! This book has really super projects with a distinctly Japanese flair. The projects are refreshing and interesting. The book is divided into seasons. My favorite season in the book was fall. I liked all of the projects in that section!

The use of colors and material was first rate. The illustrations, especially the ones showing the individual cut pieces laid out and the fabric sample charts for each project were quite helpful. I wish other project books were laid out this way. It makes it much easier to get an idea of what you might do.

This is a fun book, both to look at and to use. I have already recommended this book to several of my friends and they have all bought one. If you like this type of thing, you might also like Fabled Flowers, Fantastic Fabric Folding and/or Quilting with Japanese Fabrics.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice introduction to adding a Japanese touch, February 25, 2004
This review is from: Japanese Inspirations: 18 Quilted Projects (That Patchwork Place) (Paperback)
This book is full of ideas for sewing projects with Japanese flair. It does seem to be meant more for beginner-intermediate sewers, as there are quite a few pages on how to do piecing and appliqué (by hand and machine), as well as basic embroidery. However, the introductions to dip-dyeing, stenciling and gilding are nice extras that you don't often see in quilting books.

Overall the designs are fun, elegant and easy to make. My favorite part of the book is the templates and motifs - they're rather simple, but still good additions to a design library.

I give this book four stars out of five because although it's well done, it lacks depth and inspiration, especially compared to other books on the subject. Wonderful as an introduction and for beginner-intermediate sewers and quilters, but those already familiar with Japanese motifs and textiles will gain only a little new insight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Multi-use Book for anybody who loves using Asian fabrics, August 12, 2005
This review is from: Japanese Inspirations: 18 Quilted Projects (That Patchwork Place) (Paperback)
The wonderful color photos in this book go a long way to inspire lovers of Asian fabrics to try new techniques for sewing, stenciling, stamping, and creating graceful works with their stash of Asian fabrics.

Stencils and patterns are included, as well as techniques that are simple and straightforward. The book is aptly named, because it really does inspire one to create beautiful objects with Japanese fabrics.
