5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, March 7, 2004

This review is from: Japanese Kanji Flashcards 1 (Cards)
These are a very solid set of flashcards. I ordered mine from the publisher so I got them a little faster than what was listed here, but in any case...

I guess the description on Amazon's page is pretty accurate. They are geared directly towards the JLPT levels 4 and 3, and it's easy to tell which kanji are for the level 4 and which are for the level 3 just by looking at the color of the ink on the card. So if you're only studying for level 4 then you don't have to worry about this being "too much" for you. The rounded edges are a nice bonus, I remember always poking myself with the Tuttle cards, and it was annoying. The cards are very sturdy and hard to bend, and have a great look to them.

Another advantage to these over the Tuttle cards is that they fit nicely into their box, whereas with the Tuttle cards it would take me a long time to get them in and out of the box. Perhaps because there's too many jammed into such a small box. Anyway, these cards also have more vocabulary which is nice.

Lastly, with these cards there seems to be a hint of more to come, because on each card it lists "similar looking" kanji, and it gives a number to the card that that kanji appears on. But sometimes the number on them will be like 1000 or something, which is obviously more than you get with this set, so the only thing I can figure is that they are planning to release sets for the level 2 and level 1 of the JLPT. If so, that would be really awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revised Edition Available ISBN 0974869422, June 3, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Japanese Kanji Flashcards 1 (Cards)
Japanese Kanji Flascards 1 is the top-selling Japanese kanji product in bookstores across Japan and on Amazon.com. There is a Revised Edition of this product, but unfortunately Amazon.com is hiding it from the search results. Despite our many complaints, Amazon chooses to show the now OUT-OF-PRINT first-edition but not the current Revised Edition in the search results for "Japanese Kanji Flashcards". You can find the Revised Edition by searching for the product's ISBN number: "0974869422"

We are very sorry for the inconveience caused by Amazon.com's poor decision-making in making the Revised Edition of this product so difficult to find.

5.0 out of 5 stars White Rabbit Press "Japanese Kanji Flashcards" Are The Best!!!, December 3, 2005
This review is from: Japanese Kanji Flashcards 1 (Cards)
As an owner and user of the three main competing sets of Kanji flashcards available on the market today, I can safely say that Vol. 1 and the recently issued Vol. 2 of the "Japanese Kanji Flashcards" co-designed by Max Hodges and Tomoko Okazaki and published by White Rabbit Press are peerless. They are very attractively designed and convenient to use -- I love their larger size, their legibility, their durability (plastic coating, rounded corners, and storage tray) -- and the very comprehensive information shown on each card (stroke order diagram, 6 compounds per card, breakdown into elements, flagging of look-alike kanji). I also love the fact that these two volumes cover a large number of kanji and are tied to different levels of the JLPT. I can hardly wait for the next volumes to come out so that all 2,000+ educational and common-use kanji are available in this format!!! THESE CARDS ARE A "MUST-BUY" FOR ANY SERIOUS LEARNER OF JAPANESE !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Valuble Learning Aid!, April 14, 2005

If you are studying Japanese and find that studying kanji out of a book isn't quite as effective as you'd like, I highly recommend these cards. There is a lot of information packed on each card - the kanji, the stroke-order, radical, 6 words with the kanji in them and even look-alike kanji on one side, and the readings for the kanji as well as english definitions and the japanese readings of the vocab words on the other side. The cards show the kanji in brushstroke form and in a computer-written font, which I find helps me recognize the kanji better. The use of hiragana and katakana instead of romanized japanese is helpful because it forces you to become better at reading it. Highly recommended!

I live in Japan, where kanji flashcards are abundant, and even here, these are the best on the market. They are the most durable, easiest to read, and most useful cards I've seen. I was really annoyed with the poor physical quality and readability of the cards I saw, until these came out, which quickly caused me to sell my old cards.

It doesn't end there. Check out the publisher's website http://www.whiterabbitpress.us/index.html for forums and tips on learning Japanese.

I'm awaiting the publication of the level 2 cards, which I will promptly buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars YES!, February 25, 2004

Finally a collection of Kanji flashcards that are durable, easy to organize (they really fit back in their box) and easy to read. It will never be simple to learn Kanji - however this collection of cards provides a quality tool whether you are interested in taking the JLPT or studying for a class.

I'm a beginning learner of the Japanese language and, simply put, these cards are absolutely great! High quality, laminated, nice size, and so many cool features it's hard to know where to begin describing them. No romanji! Look alike kanji! Many sample words! They are really great! Other sets I've seen in stores are flimsy, romanji filled, and just struck me as cheap. These cards are high quality and a delight to use. Here in the USA it's hard to find such nice quality, non-romanji learning tools. I eagerly await volume II!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cards! Great investment!, March 17, 2004

This review is from: Japanese Kanji Flashcards 1 (Cards)
A very sturdy set of flashcards. I am not really a beginner, so I know many of the kanji on these cards already, but I bought them anyway because of the vocabulary (six words per cards, or over 1,700 words in the set.) I bought mine direct from the publisher and he said that the second set should be available by the end of the year, which I am really looking forward to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cards for a nice price, September 6, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Japanese Kanji Flashcards 1 (Cards)
I can't believe how happy I am with these cards. While I haven't looked at many others, there are a few things I can say about these that seem nicer. First off-- everything is in kana except for translations (naturally they're in romanji). Also, the cards I bought have no direct correlation to my Japanese studies at Clemson University, but because of the way Kanji is learned, these "few" (I say that since there are so many Kanji to learn) happen to be almost exactly the ones that I need help with. Also, each card is high-quality and the people who make the cards seem really nice and helpful. It's worth pointing out that the multiple definitions/spellings are nice, as are the pointers that tell you which radicals make up each character. Amazing product!!
