3.0 out of 5 stars Gamera battles Gaos, Jigera and Zigra/Two Gappas trash Tokyo, September 5, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Japanese Monster Movies: Collector's Edition, Vol. 2 (DVD)
To start off GAMERA VS. GAOS is a good film. In the movie both Gamera and a giant bat called Gaos are trapped inside a volcano. but when the volcano erupts they both wake up. Gaos attempts to eat a boy but Gamera rescues. Gaos attacks Tokyo after blowing up some tanks but Gamera arrives and fights him, however, Gaos escapes. The military attempts to destroy Gaos by using a turn table to make him so dizzy he can`t get back to his cave and the sun will destroy him. When this fails they use jets against Gaos. Gaos blows up the jets. But now Gamera arrives and fights Gaos again giving Japan its last hope for survival...

GAMERA VS. MONSTER X is also a good film. In the movie scientists remove a statue called the Devil`s Whistle from Wester Island evn though Gamera tries to stop them. A creature called Jiger(or Monster X) awakens and battles Gamera but defeats him and begins destroying ships. Jiger attacks Osaka and destroys jets and tanks that try to stop her. Gamera arrives and fights Jiger but Jiger injects her larva into Gamera. Then Jiger throws the Devil`s Whistle into the sea. Now it`s up to two boys kill the Jiger larva in time to arouse Gamera to stop Jiger...

GAMERA VS. ZIGRA is an awful, boring movie. In the film a spaceship from another galaxy lands in the ocean and begins destroying Japanese cities and ships. However when the military fails to stop the spaceship, it kidnaps two children. But Gamera coomes to the rescue, saves the children and destroys spaceship. But Zigra, the alien monster onboard survives and knocks out Gamera before threatening he will destroy the Earth if it doesn`t surrender. Gamera must awaken in time to stop Zigra...

MONSTER FROM A PREHISTORIC PLANET is an OK movie about two monsters called Gappas searching for their baby which was taken to a zoo in Japan. In the process Tokyo gets trashed as jets and tanks fight back.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre DVD, Mediocre Films, March 22, 2006
This review is from: Japanese Monster Movies: Collector's Edition, Vol. 2 (DVD)
This release is the kind that you would find in the 1.99 or less bin at Media Play. The picture and audio quality is poor, and the films themselves aren't the cream of the crop when it comes to kaiju movies. "Gappa the Triphibian Monster" is a laughably bad movie, but I recommend buying the Media BLasters release instead. It has the original Japanese audio and the dubbed version, while also being of a better picture quality. The Gamera films are not as fun to laugh at, but rather just annoying. They are, however, great for the younger kaiju fans. These releases are in horrible condition, as the print is very grainy. So to be blunt, the films are bad and the DVD's are bad. I suggest that if the buyer wants some better, more serious kaiju movies they check out the Godzilla movies from the 50's and 60's as well as the newer ones, which have great special effects and much better acting than this trash.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mystery boxed set!!!, March 14, 2007
By
This review is from: Japanese Monster Movies: Collector's Edition, Vol. 2 (DVD)
This box set is mysterious, because Amazon and several other dealers listed it as "out of print" before it was ever made available. You cannot order it, but it does show up in bargain bins. I believe, and this is just my theory, that a legal problem arose over the inclusion of The Sandy Frank owned versions of Gamera Vs. Gaos and Gamera Vs. Zigra. The earlier, and superior, version of Gamera vs. Gaos called "Return of the Giant Monsters" is apparently in the public domain, but Gamera vs. Zigra was only ever distributed in the US by Sandy Frank. If anyone out there knows the story behind this box set. Please comment.
