4.0 out of 5 stars Personable and well-written account of Japanese tradition, July 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Japanese Papermaking: Traditions, Tools, and Techniques (Paperback)
I stumbled across this book in my local library, but would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Japan or aspects of craftsmanship in any medium. Timothy Barrett's book was completely enjoyable to read, even for a non-papermaker like myself. He humorously and accurately describes the process and the culture associated with making paper in Japan. I liked how he included his own presence in the book - instead of a dry description of how paper is made, he tells about his own encounters with the people in Japan who make paper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious Journey in Hand Papermaking, April 1, 2005

Those of us who worship at the vat in the wet who love to create from pulp a dry and shapely somethings, hold this book as almost sacred text. How-to, becomes what to, becomes, be... a way of being as well as a way of creating is the journey in this book.
It's out of print. I own one and cherish it, and refer to it with regularity, like the Lillian Bell book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tops in the field, December 21, 2009
This review is from: Japanese Papermaking: Traditions, Tools, and Techniques (Paperback)
I have many, many books on hand paper making and this is one of the best. Beautiful drawings, clear, in depth instructions, recipes and paper making lore too. I LOVE IT and return to it again and again.
