I was very wary when I ordered this product. I am a personal chef and have a client who eats only macrobiotics. This product was called for in many recipes that I found. It works great, was very inexpensive and the clear plastic makes the press not only light weight but also something I can watch and see if the dish is being prepared to my satisfaction.

This is a great item. I searched the internet for recipes to use this and it works like a charm. Simple to use and it makes cucumber pickles overnight that taste delicous. The instructions are in japanese so search the internet for recipes under pickle press and you will also see instructions on how to use. Simple and no effort required.

Instructions are not in English, though. But the House of Rice store will send out information on how to use it if you ask. Makes a very nice and unusual gift.

I had been using my Mother's 40+ year old plastic cylindrical tsukemono press she brought with her from Japan, and was happy to find this item on Amazon. It did great work in pickling my bumper crop of Japanese eggplants and cucumbers this past summer, and it's great for one-day cabbage & carrot pickles.

Slice up vegetables, mix with spices and salt. That is all it takes to make a munchy to replace pigging out on a bag of chips. Very easy to use and clean. I have been making a batch about every three to four days using common vegetables. It has made rabbit food edible.

The actual product is a little nicer than the garish photo would indicate. It's better quality plastic than I imagined (had low-ish expectations, again due to ugly photo), by which I mean it does everything it's supposed to and nothing it's not. So the plastic doesn't stain, doesn't smell (despite me sometimes leaving veggies in too long), cleans very nicely, doesn't crack when I crank the pressure all the way up.

Only minor complaint is it's a bit too big. Fitting in fridge is not a problem but finding enough vegetables to pickle is a challenge. You'd have to eat a lot of the same thing over the next few days. But this is part of the product description to begin with so it's just a heads up to potential buyers, not a real complaint.

Oh and as a bonus it comes with a few pickling recipes in Japanese. They look pretty good, better than what random googling can find you, but you'd have to understand Japanese.

This tsukemono press is nice and big. That is what's good, and bad, about this product. If you are making a large batch of tsukemono, then it works okay. Not great, just okay. However, if you're making a smaller batch, you can forget using this press. The cylinder that applies pressure to the base of the press isn't long enough to reach near the bottom of the press. In other words, this press will not apply pressure to small amounts of tsukwmono.
