Super fast shipping. Kit was nicer than pictured, oil in clay vase, lint free cloth instead of rice paper, and a set of replacement mekugi pegs. As well, a brass hammer and wooden driver pin for removeing pegs, and 2" powder ball all in a well marked wooden display box without splinters. Overall very nice for the money. I would highly recommend this kit to anyone in need of a quality sword cleaning kit! Thanks, Mike

An excellent product for the price!! Quite functional and also good looking. I use it to polish my swords every time I do some tameshigiri and the entire kit works flawlessly. A great buy!!

I can't go into a lot of detail since I'm a NEWBIE at this sword-maintenance stuff, but this sort of thing is a must if you're buying any sword that's made of high-carbon steel (the composition of which is susceptible to rust). Even if it's for display only, a sword must be cleaned on a fairly regular basis to ward off rusting, and obviously water isn't exactly the ideal method, dig it?
The cleaning kit comes in a wooden box that feels fairly cheap but at the same time antique, and given the nature of the product, I'm going to chalk that up as a good thing--just, um, be careful with the box. Mine had some scuff-marks on the lid that slightly took away from the kanji markings on top, but meh, I don't especially care--and I'm pretty sure that was just my own bad luck. There's an instruction sheet, easy enough to follow and all that, but it loses a star for being on very, very thin paper and giving no indication as to how often a sword should generally be maintained. There is, however, enough in the box to last a good while (assuming you have only one sword to clean)--not exceptionally long, but it's not going to run out after only a few cleanings. Just don't go obsessive-compulsive on the thing. A sword doesn't need to be cleaned THAT often. Given the price, it's a good buy. If you're new, though, you may want to find an additional, alternate source of information about sword maintainence, though. The instructions here only do so much.

You get what you pay for, and ultimately this is exactly in that category. The kit is functional, though perhaps a bit lacking if you want something truly professional.
However, that's as bad as it gets - I was looking for something to keep a few replica pieces oiled and in shape. This does a fine job. It's cheap and easy, and has everything you need to take care of a display blade.

this item is ok, the oil is decent and the hammer works well, but the cloths rip easily and the powder ball is made with baby powder which is useless for your swords but can also DAMAGE them youd be better off making your own kit

Im glad I bought this, because it is essential to anyone who owns a sword (that isnt made from stainless steel or aluminium of course). Keep in mind that while this is a Japanese style cleaning kit, you dont have to use it only on Japanese style blades. It will still work very nicely on other swords, knives, etc. Metal is metal. If your blade is already rusting, this kit will not help you. It only prevents the rust from forming in the first place.
Included in this kit is everything the description says it does. Not only that, but it also has 2 spare bamboo mekugi pins and a mekuginuki (tiny hammer) for removing and putting in the mekugi pins for a Japanese sword. The top of the hammer can be unscrewed to act as a stake to help remove the pins. The powder should last a good while, but the oil comes in a very small bottle which wont last long, especially if you clean your swords frequently. It also has only 2 rice paper cloths, but they can be cut in half to make 4. This isnt a huge deal as you can use any soft disposable cloth (like tissues or toilet paper) to wipe the blade and apply the oil. The box is made out of a soft wood, but still in good condition. It did not arrive damaged in any way, nor was the kanji writing on the lid damaged or faded. Since I bought this for what was inside, the outside aesthetics dont really concern me all that much anyway. Overall, im satisfied with this purchase and I do recommend it. I am giving it a full 5 stars because it is for what it should be. My only complaint is the tiny oil bottle, but seeing as how you shouldnt be drenching your blade in oil, it's size is acceptable for someone who doesnt clean their blade frequently. The box could fit a bottle twice it's size, but whatever. After I used it all, I bought some mineral oil and its working just as well. My point is, dont buy this kit exclusively for the cleaning oil because there isnt much of it. For nearly $5 (when I bought it), id say this cleaning kit is defenatly worth the price.

This set included everything pictured. My only complaints are that it does not include a very large bottle of polish, and that the wooden box is splintering off on one of the edges, so I have to be really careful not to break off that piece.

kit includes everything as noted, however, be aware that the oil included in this kit is not choji oil but some amber liquid which seems like a light machine oil. i don't feel comfortable using the oil in this kit; also the mekuginuki seems poorly made (brass is unevenly polished but more importantly, it feels a bit loose and requires very regular tightening). if these two issues are not too important to your maintenance/cleaning, then this kit should be adequate.
