This book is very inspirational for an intermediate to advanced quilter. I do believe a much better job could have been done on instruction and editing of the individual blocks. The print for cutting detail is extremely small, assembly instructions are difficult to follow. Actually, I redrafted all of the blocks I have used so far and found a few mistakes, and I believe incomplete instructions. I would not recommend this book for any but advanced quilters. Some of the photography of blocks is misleading since they are not quilted and the seams show through giving the appearance of more complexity than there actually is.

This book essentially consists of two parts:
* Materials, tools and techniques in which is considered fabric, equipment, cutting, piecing, applique, embellishment and finishing; and
* Block directory in which is considered choosing blocks. patchwork blocks, applique blocks and combined technique blocks. In addition the templates are included.
According to my wife - the quilter - Japanese Taupe Quilts is a wonderful extension to Japanese Quilt Blocks by the same author. The instructions are clear and well illustrated, with the principle of "mix and match" being well explained. She particularly liked the projects in which uses for the blocks (e.g. in a bag, wall hanging, pillow or table runner) for purposes other than quilts were develkoped.

I have been in love with Japanese Taupe Fabrics for several years. I have painstakingly collected them for some time now and have a nice collection. I've been waiting for a worthy project and am delighted that there is now a beautiful book presented by Susan Briscoe to inspire me to start cutting into my beautiful collection.

Taupe is considered the new black these days - especially in quilting circles. The definition for taupe in the Encarta Dictionary, English (UK) edition is "a dark brownish-grey colour". Not a very stirring definition I'll grant you, but if you're looking for a colour to enhance all colours around it, you can't do much better than taupe.

Susa Briscoe is a quilter of renown, who also understands the wonderful gift the colour taupe gives to our quilting palettes. Susan has recognised that the hue of taupe is found throughout the Japanese countryside and culture and together with her passion for Japanese quilting designs, Susan has put together another wonderful quilt publication titled Japanese Taupe Quilt Blocks, Calm, Neutral Collection. This book is the brother of her other Japanese Quilt Block book.

This book brings a unique slant on the enormous availability of beautiful Japanese Quilt blocks, but using the delightful tints, tones and shades that make up the spectrum of taupe hues. Susan has carefully organised the blocks into techniques to make easy selection. Techniques such as Patchwork piecing, appliqué (needle turning) and combining these two techniques is also addressed.

Like Susan's previous publication, Japanese Quilt Blocks to Mix and Match, the publication itself is on very quality paper stock, and the size and shape is a little different than most quilt books that will be found on quilter's library shelves. I like the shape of this book. It's easy to handle and sits flat when opened.

One of the highlights of this book is that the appliqué patterns are all included in the back of the book.

All the blocks in this book are 9" square , so to me you can have as many as you like to either make a quilt or a table runner by just adding another square. The squares look involved but when you read the instructions and see the diagrams, it doesn't look that hard.My problem will be deciding which patterns to start with and what fabric to use. This is a lovely book to own, I usually only buy single patterns as I don't always like everything in a book, but this one is all about selecting either a patchwork block or an applique block.

I love this book. The designs run from very simple to very very complicated, and the simple ones are as lovely as the most elaborate. The photos and diagrams are clear, and the designs showing how different blocks can be combined are inspiring. I wish the resource section listed a few more sources; that's my only complaint.

To me, this book is a directory of quilt block designs, which is very much what the author, Susan Briscoe's previous book, Japanese Quilt Blocks to Mix and Match, was all about. I was hoping to find examples of finished quilts, for inspiration in using the lovely taupe neutrals color palette, and disappointed that there was only a single quilt included, along with a pillow, two bags, and two other small projects.

If you are an experienced quilter who is wanting to expand your collection of block designs, either pieced or appliqued, that have been influenced by Asian design, then you are sure to find something to please you.
