Translated with an introduction by award-winning translator Hiroaki Sato, Japanese Women Poets is an anthology of Japanese women's poetry from the earliest folk songs to the 7th century up through the close of World War II. The translations include extensive notes that explain subtle references, such as "knowing what fine feelings are" as an allusion to a tale in which having children is equated with the development of fine feelings such as compassion. A handful of black-and-white illustrations grace this "must-have" addition to international poetry shelves. Highly recommended.
