Jar of Dreams

I think the book Jar of Dreams by Yoshiko Uchida is good, but it isn't in my top ten books. Rinko is an eleven-years-old girl living in California during the Great Depression. In the beginning Rinko finds something different about Mama. She left the water running and the newspaper out and the scissors out. Mama is normally not like this. Rink...

4.0 out of 5 stars Rinko Learns About Herself, October 26, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Jar of Dreams (Paperback)
This book is a story you will want to read. Rinko Tsujimoto is a Japanese girl who is living in a family of five. She has one older and one younger brother. Rinko sometimes bullies her younger brother, Joji, but not much. They still love each other. Rinko's favorite is her older brother Cal, who is not in the book much. He has just begun college in Stockton, even though he doesn't think he'll get a good job because he's Japanese.
This story is all about Aunt Waka coming to stay with Rinko at her house and the adventures they have together. Rinko is not so thrilled about Aunt Waka at first. Aunt Waka has a deformed foot, and she gave Rinko a kimono instead of something she could play with. She was wrong about her though. Aunt Waka was great and she changed Rinko's life by teaching her to be proud of herself and her Japanese character. I give this story four stars because it doesn't have enough excitement for me and it's not the best story in the world. Still, if you like family stories then this is the book for you.

Rinko lives in California and is friendly and kind but many people don't pay attention to just because she is Japanese. Rinko feels she is no good until her Aunt Waka comes to visit. Then Aunt Waka teaches Rinko many things especially that she should be proud to be Japanese.

4.0 out of 5 stars kid's review by Isabella, May 31, 2007
This review is from: A Jar of Dreams (Paperback)
A book called 'A Jar of Dreams' is about an 11 year Japanese girl living in Califorina with a younger brother named Joji and an older brother named Cal.And her name is Rinko.

In late July her Aunt Waka comes from Japan to stay until late August. She teaches her whole family how to admire thier Japanese cultre.

Rinko does not want Aunt Waka to come in first place. Will she change her mind about Aunt Waka once she meets her?

In the end when Aunt Waka has to leave,Rinko becomes proud of her Japanese
culture.

I thought this book is a great read, for the whole class or just a small reading group,in an 8-10 age group. I give it 4 stars out of 5.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Jar of Dreams, April 19, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Jar of Dreams (Paperback)
I read A Jar of Dreams, by Yoshiko Uchida. The story takes place in Oakland California during the Great Depression .A Jar of Dreams is mostly about Rinko, a Japanese American girl who struggles with her identity, because she is not fully American and does not like her Japanese culture. She wishes that she was fully American so she could fit in. In school she hasn't found many great friends.
To make matters worse, Rinko's mom opened a home laundry mat, and began a mound of trouble with a fellow laundry owner named Wilbur Starr. Mr. Starr does horrible things to Rinko's family in hopes they will close their home laundry mat.
Rinko's aunt comes from Japan and stays with them for the summer. She teaches their culture. Will Rinko ever learn to embrace who she is? You'll have to read to find out.
I love this book, and if you love drama you will enjoy this book as well. So get ready for a roller coaster of emotions!

A Jar of Dreams
I am reading a book called A Jar Of Dreams by Yoshida Uchida.
It's about a girl named Rinko Tsujimura growing up in California during the Great Depression.

She goes to school but she feels like a big nothing. Because in school they call her Jap-kid and "ching chong china man" and that makes her feel bad. But one day Aunt Waka comes to visit and teaches Rinko the importance of being Japanese. Do you think Aunt Waka's visit will change Rinko's life forever?

Rinko's Aunt Waka comes to visit from Japan. During this time Japanese people were treated differently from Americans. Will Rinko learn to respect her culture more often? Will the Japanese finally be treated with respect? To
answer these questions you will have to read the book.

The book called Jar of Dreams by Yoshiko Uchida is about a girl name Rinko.
She is eleven years old. She's Japanese. Kids make fun of her because of her face and hair color. She hates going to school because the kids always make fun of her. She does not want to be Japanese but her Aunt Waka comes from Japan to make her be proud for who she is and to never give up.
I love this book it is so happy and sad at the same time. Will Aunt Waka's visit change what Rinko thinks about herself? Read the book to find out.
