Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-The selections in this accessible volume were collected as part of a research project, for which Cullinan polled children on their favorite poems by 10 award-winning poets. Perhaps because of the nature of the selection process, the final product seems rather bland, as there is no balance of the poets' works for mood, tone, or subject. The poems that are included will easily gain acceptance from their intended audience-John Ciardi's "Mummy Slept Late and Daddy Fixed Breakfast" or David McCord's "The Pickety Fence"-but a true encounter with these people who, as Arnold Adoff states, make poems "to sing as well as to stay" awaits further reading. Pen-and-ink sketches scattered throughout, small black-and-white portraits of the contributors, a quote from each of them about their work, and brief biographical sketches round out the collection.?Kathleen Whalin, Greenwich Country Day School, CT

From Booklist

Gr. 3^-5, younger for reading aloud. What's good and what's popular come together in this attractive anthology. More than 3,500 students were asked to rank the poems they liked best by each of the 10 winners of the National Council of Teachers of English Award for Poetry for Children. The favorites are collected here, five or six poems each by David McCord, Aileen Fisher, Karla Kuskin, Myra Cohn Livingston, Eve Merriam, John Ciardi, Lilian Moore, Arnold Adoff, Valerie Worth, and Barbara Esbensen. For each poet there's also a watercolor wash portrait, a personal quote about writing poetry, a brief biography, and a selected bibliography. The design is accessible, with large, clear type, lots of white space, and an occasional pen-and-ink drawing. Of course, the kids' choices don't always represent the best of these poets, and some of the best and the most popular poets aren't here at all (no Kennedy or Prelutsky, for example), but one anthology can't do it all. As editor Cullinan says in her introduction, these choices show that children like poems they can understand, "ones that make them laugh and ones that tell a story." Hazel Rochman

5.0 out of 5 stars These Tiny Poems Shine!, December 1, 2003

This review is from: A Jar of Tiny Stars: Poems by Ncte Award-Winning Poets (Hardcover)
If you catch a firefly
and keep it in a jar,
You may find that
you have lost
A tiny star.

If you let it go then,
back into the night,
You may see it
once again
Star bright.

Lillian Moore's touching poem, which lends this inspiring anthology its name, captures the healing power of poetry, which Bernice Cullinan dedicates to her late son, Jonathan Paul. Rather than having adults select the poems in this jewel of a book, Cullinan polled the persons for whom these poems were written, children. The poems, though simple and easy to read, reflect on deep and personal thoughts; they are also wonderfully humorous. At the end of the book, in a section titled "About the Poets," Dr. Cullinan lets the poets speak for themselves, adding additional information sparingly and tastefully.

These poems are a joy to behold, not only for children, but for adults as well.
