5.0 out of 5 stars Best accessory for vacuum sealers, January 3, 2010
This review is from: Wide-Mouth Jar Sealer T03-0023-01
This and the normal mouth version are the best accessories for the vacuum sealers. They are the only way to actually save money using these things. The rolls of plastic are expensive as are the special containers. The plastic rolls are consumables with one (or two) uses per piece. the containers are re-usable, but can only contain one thing at a time.

These jar sealers are tools. They are not used by the process. We have used ours for months several times a day with no wear.

You take a jar and a flat disc lid (under 25 cents each) and use this to remove the air from the jar. The lid stays on due to the vacuum under it. This accessory is then removed from the jar and can be used to vacuum out yet another jar. The lid can be re-used dozens of times if you are at all careful. For another 15 cents or so you can have "rings" that keep the lid on if the vacuum seal is broken and those can be used hundreds of times if you get the ones that don't rust. The jars are free if you eat anything that comes in jars.

Here is the breakdown:

The roll/bag is 45 cents per foot If I generously assume two uses per piece and 6 inches per use, that comes to 11 cents a use. You loose two inches each use so the very best possible value is 8 cents a use.

The cheapest container is about $8. If you always keep something in it (unlikely) and rotate your leftovers through it three times a week (also unlikely), you will be down to about a nickel a use after a year and will have only one container if it lasts that long.

If you buy this and 12 lids & rings for a total of $12, you now have 12 containers. If you only change the contents once a week you are under 2 cents/use after a year. I'll generously say 3 cents factoring in attrition. Additional containers would be $4/dozen so you can amortize the tool very quickly.

If your goal is to save money, buy this product. If your goal is to play with your gadget, buy this product. If your goal is to avoid math, I have already done it for you so buy this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diehard and Reliable, January 10, 2010
This review is from: Wide-Mouth Jar Sealer T03-0023-01
I've had one of these in every size for over 10 years and have used them a lot.

Mine show no sign of being in need of replacement anytime soon.

Tip: Keep them clean with a light coating of cooking oil on the gasket and will last 10 years easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Accessory, Better than using the Canisters, October 12, 2010

This is a great addition to a Foodsaver products, and saves MUCH more money over time than using the bags or canisters.

This is very easy to use. For dry goods it is wonderful. Just hook the jar sealer up to your vacuum sealer, put a lid on the glass jar you want to seal, and suction until it's done. Most models have an indicator light that will let you know. This works much better than the Foodsaver Canisters which crack over time (as they're plastic) and is far more affordable. The jars can be used over and over this way.

This also works great with the old handheld canister vacuum sealer from Foodsaver, but unfortunately they discontinued that item. Either way, most of the models have the hose port, so it's not really an issue.
