Customer Reviews

Perfect for use in a 3 gallon betta tank.

This is easily hidden by the plants, and does not cause a huge amount of water movement which bothers my betta.

This filter is very easy to setup and works great.

I'm using this sponge filter in place of the obnoxiously large (though admittedly effective) Tetra "micro" filter that came with my 3-gallon Crescent tank kit; the setup is working well.

I like using the sponge filter because it saves me the cost of the disposable filter cartridges used by the Tetra unit. I can just swish the sponge around in a bucket of water to clean it of debris while (hopefully) not removing the beneficial bacteria that's colonized it. It also saves a lot of space in the tank itself compared to the Tetra filter.

For those unfamiliar with how sponge filters work, please know that you'll need an air pump and air line (not included here) to pump air to the bottom of the filter. As the bubbles rise back up through the larger plastic tube on top of the filter, a gentle suction effect is created that draws water in through the sponge surrounding the main body of the unit, thus filtering the water. A check valve (to prevent water from running back up the air line when the pump is off) and an air flow control valve (to adjust rate of bubble production) are also recommended, though not strictly necessary for the operation of the sponge filter itself.

In the case of the Jardin Mini Cylinder filter, the air hose attaches to a nozzle at the top of the unit. Be sure to run your air line through the plastic lift tube first, before attaching both to the main filter housing -- the tube is necessary for the filter to work properly, and it's a lot harder getting the air hose attached if the tube is already in place. ;)

The base is weighted, but just barely. The entire unit will tend to float until the entire sponge has become laden with water. Even then, it is pretty light in the water.

I've had this sponge filter running for two or three weeks now. My tank's not cycled yet, but so far I'm very happy with the filter. It's small enough to fit in my five gallon tanks without taking up too much space and my water is staying clean. It's weighted at the bottom so it stays in place. My betta fish do not seem bothered by the output as they do with traditional filters.

If you are looking for an inexpensive filter for a small tank, I recommend these sponge filters.

They're wonderful if you own a Betta. Definitely recommend people to use these for them. Very quiet and heavy duty.

This is a pretty basic sponge filter. We're using it in a five gallon tank for our betta fish. It's works pretty well and is a nice size. It doesn't take up too much room in the tank, which is great. The weight on the bottom isn't quite as heavy as I would like, though. It tends to float a bit. But if you set it on the bottom and get some gravel over the base, it will stay put. The filter is perfect for out betta as his fins can't get stuck in it. All in all, it's a nice little filter. Especially for the price.

Perfect size for a 2-/2 gallon breeder tank or other small aquarium. Aerates and filters. It was smaller than I expected,,, which was perfect for my application!

I was considering a DIY sponge filter in my sons 5 gallon tank, but after the intial setup I decided I didn't like the giant yellow sponge. For the cost of this and the size, it works and looks great in the 5 Gallon tank.

I had to do some question asking before I bought this and got a few incorrect responses back. For those looking, this does not accept an air stone. It's designed to create it's own bubbles the way it forces the air down through the chamber.
Then I used the air regulator valve that came with my pump to control how much air flow is going through it.
