Product Description

Product Description

Bone-Up provides ossein hydroxyapatite complex (OHC) (from free-range Australian/New Zealand calves), which includes the superior combination of the inorganic calcium lattice of microcrystalline hydroxyapatite (MCHA) within an organic protein milieu. The OHC is combined with vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 as MK-7 from natural fermentation (a more bioavailable form of vitamin K) to support the deposition of calcium into the bones as well as to assist in building up the organic bone matrix. Potassium citrate is also added for optimal osteo support.

Bone Mass and Ossein Hydroxyapatite

In 1982, an important calcium supplementation study was concluded and reported by the Dept. of Medicine and Radiology, Royal Free Hospital in London, England. Fifty-three women with reduced calcium absorption and accelerated bone loss were separated into three groups and studied for over 14 months. At the conclusion of the study, only the women that received 1,000 mg of calcium from ossein hydroxyapatite (OHC) along with vitamin D showed significant support for bone-health.*

OHC produces more prolonged calcium balance than soluble calcium salts. It also allows the bone osteoblast cells to be more receptive to its components and to build bone tissue. Furthermore, OHC provides both the organic and inorganic constituents found in human bone: the hydroxyapatite microcrystals consist of calcium, phosphorous, oxygen, and hydrogen; the trace minerals zinc, strontium, silicon and iron; and proteins, amino acids and aminoglycans.*

Bone Health

Bone consists of calcium and phosphorous crystals embedded in a framework of interlocking protein fibers. The protein fibers are made primarily of collagen. The mineral crystals give bone hardness, strength, and rigidity. Collagen fibers impart their quality of flexibility. Hydroxyapatite composes 67 percent of the weight of bone, and the collagenous fibers make up the remaining 33 percent.*

The average adult has 1,000 - 1,200 grams of calcium in the body. Bones are the body's largest calcium storehouse and will release calcium into the bloodstream in order to ensure correct blood levels of calcium. Thus, blood calcium levels can be normal while bone loss can be considerable.

Between 2 - 4 percent of a person's skeleton is remodeled every year. This means that calcium and other minerals leave the bone in a process called resorption and then must be "remodeled" or replaced. Whether due to poor nutrition or reduced hormone levels with the onset of aging, the loss of calcium and other minerals from the bone creates tiny holes that make bones weak and brittle, particularly if collagen is being lost.

It has been estimated that post-menopausal women lose 0.7 percent to 2 percent of their bone per year while men lose 0.5 percent - 0.7 percent. Between 45 and 75 years of age, women lose 30 percent of their skeletal structure and men lose 15 percent.

Calcium Plus

It starts with the finest source of calcium available: New Zealand or Australian bovine bone hydroxyapatite from chemical-free, range-grazed calves less than two years old (bones from veal calves are never used). Skeletal health, however, requires more than calcium. Scientific evidence conclusively demonstrates the need for other nutrients like vitamin D, vitamin K, potassium, magnesium, boron, and trace minerals such as zinc, copper, and manganese.*

Who Needs to Supplement Calcium?

Research has indicated that 85 percent of women over the age of 20 and at least 50 percent of men from age 35 consume less than the RDI for calcium. Caffeine, alcohol, sugar, high protein diets and soda (particularly sodas that are high in phosphorous) can deplete calcium.

In addition, calcium absorption has long been thought to be stomach-acid dependent, but both stomach acid production and calcium absorption decline with age.

Bone-Up Clinical Trial

The results of a clinical trial published in the Journal of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine (DiSilvestro RA et al. J Nutr Environ Med. 2007; 16(1):26-32) found that exercise and supplementation of calcium, vitamin D3 and other micronutrients from Bone-Up significantly improved bone health in young adult women.*

In an 8-week double-blind placebo-controlled study of 24 female students ages 18 to 24, supplementation with Bone-Up (not placebo) was found to produce statistically significant decreases in markers of bone degradation, while increasing levels of plasma bone specific alkaline phosphatase (an indicator of bone synthesis), plasma 2,5-OH-vitamin D (an indicator of vitamin D nutritional status) and plasma parathyroid hormone.*

Health Claim: In conjunction with regular, weight-bearing exercise and a healthy diet, calcium helps teen and young adult women build bone mass and maintain bone health, and may reduce their risk of osteoporosis later in life.* Daily calcium intake above 2,000 mg is not likely to provide additional benefit. Adequate calcium intake is also linked to reduced osteoporosis by slowing bone loss in older men and women.*

Vitamin K and the other micronutrients are well to have combined with your calcium supplement if you are taking it for bone health.

This is truly a quality product. It is a Superior Calcium formula because it also includes other fine ingredients such as Vitamin K2, Potassium Citrate and MK-7, magnessium, Vitamin C and D2,Zinc, Copper, Manganese, and Boron. My wife and I have been using Bone-Up for several years and our doctors lab tests prove that we are receiving great benefits from this product. Our bone density reports are off the charts...We both highly recommend this product to anybody who is serious about their wellness. We are both senior citizens.

I have mild osteoporosis, and my doctor has prescribed that I take at least 1200 mg of calcium per day. She also wants to see me taking at least 800 IU of vitamin D along with it. However, I have been aware for some time that other minerals are instrumental in maintaining bone health. Magnesium is an important mineral that most people are deficient in, and without magnesium, calcium is not properly absorbed. Vitamin K is also needed in small quantities for bone health, along with zinc and boron. Phosphorus is a very important mineral associated with bone mineralization, but it is so abundant in the foods we eat that it is not necessary to supplement it. A quick study of essential minerals for bone health on the Internet has confirmed these findings to me. Common knowledge would have it that calcium citrate as well as other formations of calcium are superior to calcium carbonate, but studies published on the Internet tell me that this is not necessarily true. For most people, all forms of calcium are metabolized OK.

From reading other peoples’ commentaries, it seems that people take calcium for many different reasons, and have different reactions to the calcium they take. In general, the body will not absorb more than 500 mg of calcium in one dose. So, when taking doses of calcium, it is well to split it into several doses per day, taken with food. Most adults only require 1000 mg of calcium per day, but aging women need at least 1200 mg of calcium per day. Magnesium is dosed at about one half the number of milligrams of calcium that you take. So if you take 500 mg of calcium, it should be accompanied by vitamin D as well as 250 mg of magnesium. Vitamin K and the other micronutrients are well to have combined with your calcium supplement if you are taking it for bone health.

I have had to use large doses prednisone (steroids) for years for asthma. My bone density became extremely brittle because of it. Just rolling over in bed I would break bones. I had six inch foam on my bed to prevent this. I had a punctured lung breaking a rib before. I could pick up a gallon of milk and break bones in my wrist. I was forever breaking bones in my foot just walking. It's been a long road.

Deciding to take my health in my own hands rebuilding bone was part of it. I started taking the original bone up. I had a lot of pain in my bones especially my neck where there was more deterioration. Within weeks the pain stopped. I can't tell you relief! Within six months my bones were no longer so brittle. In a year my bone density was just below normal. I was so excited! Years later my bones are normal and asthma better.

I take Bone up and Vitamin D. Liquid Vitamin D 3 - 2,000 IU per drop - 900 Servings - High Potency

I have just recently switched over to the Bone Up Plus with Glucosamine, MSM, Curcumin & SDG Flax lignans. Jarrow Formulas Ultra Bone-Up, 240 Count

Here is the Plus part:

* Glucosamine: I think most people know this is helpful in arthritis pain. CAUTION: glucosamine may contribute to insulin resistance. It has been considered safe for diabetics but be sure to monitor your sugar! The human body naturally produces Glucosamine, but as we grow older, our bodies stop producing enough Glucosamine, causing our bones and joints to wear out at a much faster rate.

My mom, sister and I take Bone-up and have found no negative side effects that friends mention with other calcium products. My mother was diagnosed with mild osteoperosis, and after taking 6 months of Bone-up, has no sign of osteoperosis. We highly recommend it for pre-menopausal women, along with a healthy diet. :)

I am male, 46 years old. My teeth have become progressively loose, I think just because of age. Every time I ate I had to pick food from between my teeth. I started taking this product and within two weeks I noticed my teeth feel smooth and glossy. When I clench my jaw my teeth are firm. I only occasionaly have to use the toothpick.
For the record I started taking this product just to maintain my bone mass. I had no idea it would have the effect it did on my teeth. I was pretty much resigned to having them eventually fall out. I was very surprised and delighted with this unexpected side effect.
At the time I started taking this product I also started taking 5,000 IU of Vitamin D (yes, five thousand). I also started taking zinc (I forget the dosage and the bottle is at work, sorry). I also take a multi vitamin and fish oil. Also, just to be fair and honest, at the time I started taking Bone Up I also started on testosterone creme which was prescribed by my doctor. I dont think the testosterone is responsible for the improvement in my teeth (actually I don't think it does anything and I will most likely stop using it).
I am pretty much a skeptic when it comes to herbal remedies. Most of them are junk but this one is a winner. I hope others benefit from it also.
