5.0 out of 5 stars Bone-Up really does increase bone density, June 1, 2010
I've been taking Bone-Up for three years because of osteopenia. This followed a regimen of Fosamax for two years. Fosamax didn't increase my bone density at all. After a year of Bone-Up, my bone scan showed a 5-7% increase in bone density. I've never had side effects. Be sure you take two pills twice a day with food and not with coffee to ensure full absorption.

The dirty little secret is that Big Pharma pushes its products on doctors, and they never hear about the safer, cheaper herbal alternatives unless we speak up. My internist finally accepts its legitimacy - somehow, my telling her that you could buy Bone-Up at Whole Foods made it seem credible. While the FDA does not deal with herbal products, its approval means nothing. Fosamax, Actonel and Boniva - all bisphosphonates - have proven to cause brittle bones, which are more likely to fracture, after use over many years. They make bones denser but not stronger. None of these drugs was tested long enough to detect this horrendous result and were approved by the FDA before it was known. So much for the FDA.

The January 15, 2008 issue of the Journal of Rheumatology references a study done in Canada at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute. Researchers looked at NORMAL men and women, who had used bisphosphonates for an average of only 2 years. There was a 300% increased risk of bone death in the group who took these medications compared with the group who didn't use these drugs. These medications stay in your system for decades.

By the way, Bone-Up was recommended to me by both an acupuncturist AND an internist practicing both eastern and western medicine. Needless to say, it is also far more effective than Calcium-D pills.

5.0 out of 5 stars great supplement, January 9, 2009
My mom, sister and I take Bone-up and have found no negative side effects that friends mention with other calcium products. My mother was diagnosed with mild osteoperosis, and after taking 6 months of Bone-up, has no sign of osteoperosis. We highly recommend it for pre-menopausal women, along with a healthy diet. :)
