Product Description

Product Profile

Dietary protein is the only nutrient group that yields an appreciable amount of amino acids upon digestion. Since amino acids are the building blocks needed to create functional and structural proteins in the body, from antibodies for immune function to collagen for skin and bones, it is essential to consume adequate amounts. But when the body lacks an adequate supply of nitrogen compounds like protein and amino acids, a state referred to as “negative nitrogen balance,” it is forced to break down muscle tissue to liberate reserves. The opposite situation, a surplus (i. e., positive nitrogen balance), is necessary for muscle growth. So in order to build or maintain musculature, extra dietary protein is needed.

Beyond Amino Acids

Whey not only contains a complete amino acid profile but also a host of other beneficial factors. These factors include alpha-lactalbumin, beta-lactoglobulin, lactoferrin, serum albumin, lysozyme, and immunoglobulins A, G, and M. In addition, whey protein provides more of the essential amino acids than other protein sources. Furthermore, about 25% of the amino acids in whey typically consist of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs). BCAAs are readily oxidized as an energy source during and after stress and exercise. Whey protein is a source of cysteine, a precursor to the vital intracellular antioxidant glutathione (GSH). GSH is depleted by oxidative stress that occurs during exercise, immune defense, and healing. Some researchers contend that whey protein plays a role in immune health by providing GSH precursors and increasing levels of GSH in tissue.

Whey Protein: Concentrate vs. Isolate

The debate about “the best type” of whey protein is a frequent topic of discussion on bodybuilding message boards. Typically, one form is advocated based solely upon the manufacturing method used to produce it. For instance, whey protein isolate (WPI) is commonly touted as being a “purer” form of whey because it typically goes through more processing steps. However, these processing steps can destroy and eliminate some of the components that provide additional benefits. Whey protein concentrate (WPC) generally undergoes gentle processing, leaving many of the other natural components intact. In addition, the majority of clinical studies investigating the effects of whey protein supplementation have been conducted using WPC. Ultimately, the type of whey protein chosen (WPC vs. WPI) may not be as critical as the quality of its sources and the other components added to the final product (such as sugar or artificial ingredients versus natural flavoring, etc). When evaluating the quality of a whey protein product, one should read the Nutrition Facts panel to check for the source of ingredients (e. g. non-GMO, rBST-free) and the presence/absence of additives like artificial flavors and sweeteners.

Benefits Of Jarrow Formulas Whey Protein

Jarrow Formulas Whey Protein is made with whey protein concentrate that is certified to be free of recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBST). It comes only from U.S. cows and is made in small batches in an environmentally conscious facility that supports local dairy farms. It uses the high quality rennet enzyme system, which concentrates protein and preserves glutamine while producing a superior end product. Elevated temperatures are avoided during the manufacturing process. High temperatures and spray-drying can lead to the degradation of glutamine, which is an important amino acid for the synthesis of muscle tissue and for immune function. Finally, the product is ultrafiltered to remove greater amounts of lactose and fat from the final product, and it is free of any artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners.

1) This is whey concentrate. After whey is drained off during milk-to-cheese processing, it undergoes ultrafiltration process to become whey concentrate. Supplement companies usually use WPC-80 (80% protein). Whey isolate is the result of taking whey concentrate through additional filtration process to take out more fat/lactose resulting in ~90% protein content. Whey isolates have higher content of protein per gram, but it is not necessarily superior. The additional processing involved in making an isolate may strip away additional health promoting subfractions of whey (especially when that process uses ion exchange chromotography which involves acids). Whey concentrates are generally the better choice for people who don't mind the extra gram or two of fat/lactose. And it costs less than whey isolates.

2) Regarding UNFLAVORED: This does not mean it is tasteless. It simply refers that no flavors or sweeteners were added. Whey has a mild milky taste but if you mix it in plain water, it is not pleasant.

3) Jarrow Whey is USA sourced and comes from cows not treated with growth hormone. Other whey protein products may come from standard cows not monitored for hormones, or foreign countries like New Zealand or China unless noted otherwise.

4) Jarrow Whey contains small amount of soy lecithin (emulsifier). Soy lecithin is often added during spray drying process so the powders do not clump together and to make it mix better in liquids. This is a common practice. Other products may add additional emulsifiers such as Xanthan Gum or Guar Gum.

5) Lo Han Guo used in the flavored Jarrow Whey is a natural sweetener (derived from fruit grown in China).

This is an excellent protein supplement. I am comparing this product to Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard, Vanilla Ice Cream, 2 Pound, and Optimum Nutrition Performance Whey 100% Isolate Vanilla Shake Protein (I could not find the product on Amazon, this is why I am not providing the link. I bought mine at Costco). Finally, I will also refer to the Optimum Nutrition Instantized BCAA 5000mg Powder, Unflavored, 336g.

I use whey protein supplements right after my strength workout by mixing the powder with 1% Organic Milk in a Original 28oz Blender Bottle Pink. The taste for all of them three is excellent. The way they dissolve in milk is exactly the same. You get a perfect shake every time. The tastes are different, but this is where this gets very personal and subjective. My favorite one, in terms of taste, is the Gold Standard Vanilla Ice Cream, because I love vanilla ice cream, and it actually tastes exactly as if you were eating ice cream. The 100% isolate is like vanilla shake taste, and it also tastes exactly like that. The Jarrow one is French Vanilla flavor, and it is the third in my list of preferences when it comes to taste. But again, this is a very personal assessment, and regardless, all of them taste great. None of them taste bad at all.

A key element to take into consideration when choosing a whey protein supplement is the quality and ingredients of it.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
There are many whey protein powders on the market. Like many, I have tried several kinds. And in my experience of using whey protein, Jarrow Formula has been the best. If you are looking for effective and clean taste of protein then consider this product:

1. THE TASTE. For many protein powders, the taste has been the problem. They solve by adding sweeteners or sugar. But some do not want added calories or a chemical that might not be good for them. But Jarrow's protein powder has that clean taste without the "yucky-ness." This French Vanilla is natural, mildly sweet (without adding artificial sweetners) and easy to drink with water or milk.
2. THE SOLVENCY. The powder easily dissolves in water or milk. If you do not want to use a mixer or even a spoon, try this. In an empty water bottle with cap, add 6 - 8 oz water with protein powder (you might need to use a funnel to pour the powder in), then close the cap and SHAKE well until it is well mixed. And enjoy!
3. THE EFFECT. The protein seems to work well. When I drink it after a workout or even regular work (manual labor), I noticed that the soreness is somewhat diminished and I feel at ease. I also did not see any side effect of the the product. My stomach was fine.

All in all, love the product and recommended!

It's absurd the amount of different kinds of protein powders I have tried over the years; everything from whey concentrates and isolates, to blends, to egg, rice, pea, beef, soy, and from every company on the market. Most are generally great, but many cause digestion issues for me (bloating, gas, general discomfort -- all the reasons my wife wants me to sleep in a different room). Jarrow Formulas Whey Protein is by far one of the best I have tried, which speaks volumes to its quality. Here are a couple of key points:

PROS
* Easily digestible, even for those with gluten sensitivities
* Mixes very well with very little clumping
* Exceptional nutritional profile, low in calories, fat and carbs, with a high ratio amino acids -- especially BCAAs (4g per serving, which is great post-workout)
* Clean formula, with no added fillers, free of hormones and artifical flavors
* Flavor (in this case, French vanilla) is excellent without being overly sweet/sugary
* Very affordable with a high value, at around $.60 per serving

CONS
* Protein content could be higher, as per 26g scoop, it only yields 17g of protein (about 65%)
* Ever-so-slight aftertaste that's a little off-putting, but really isn't a deal breaker
