The primary reason for taking GABA would be to reduce anxiety.
GABA is like a non-addictive, healthy form of “Valium”.
The enzyme glutamic acid decarboxylase (which forms GABA from glutamic acid) decreases with age. Manganese supplements can help counter the reduced synthesis of GABA due to aging.
GABA, Glutamine (fuel and mediator) and Glutamic Acid (excitatory) freely convert between each other.
GABA and glutamic acid in megadoses have been reported to increase IQ in the elderly.
While GABA supplementation appears to be very safe, dosage should generally be less than 1 gram per day. (Therapeutic supplementation ranges up to 3 grams per day. Beyond that it usually causes nausea.) Watch for tingling sensation in the face and hands and a slight shortness of breath as common side effects. This should not last more than a couple minutes. (at the low dosage of this product there should be *no* side effects)
Ashwagandha interacts with the GABA-A receptor. Anti-inflammatory, adaptogen, antispasmodic, sedative; General dosage: Two 500 mg capsules three to four times a day. Be careful when mixing with barbiturates and benzodiazepines. Very low potential for toxicity
Theanine is another well known "calming" nutrient.
This combination is surprisingly effective with a very low dosage. I'm quite pleased with this product.
I have been taking the Gaba Soothe daily in the morning about 40 minutes before breakfast as it is suggested to be taken on an empty stomach.
I normally can't take large capsules but this one is not too big.
After doing some reading on Gaba, which is an amino acid found in the brain, it is suggested that Vitamin B6, Theanine and Magnesium add in the synthesis of Gaba. The Jarrow Gaba Soothe has Magnesium, Theanine and Ashwagangha (a ginseng like extract from India which also aides in stress and strain reduction).
Driving stresses me out. Today, I got lost in a road detour and normally would freak out, but I remained calm, as I was late for my students.
Hopefully I'm on my way to a stress free existence.
GABA is a neurotransmitter, which regulates the relaxation response in the brain. Every drug that we take, that has a psychological effect on us, does so because there's a neurotransmitter in the brain, with a chemical structure very similar to the drug. Endorphins are chemically similar to opioids. Acetyl Choline is similar to nicotine. Cocaine is similar to dopamine. LSD is similar to serotonin. And so on. Well, the drugs like Valium, are similar to GABA. The problem with taking GABA orally, is that it has a hard time crossing the blood/brain barrier. You'll need to get ALL of this pill into your system, to get an effect. So you must take it on an empty stomach. Don't take it with tea, either, coz caffeine is a stimulant. You're going after the opposite effect of caffeine when consuming GABA.
Does this drug actually promote Alpha Wave activity?
After I read the studies, which suggested that GABA doesn't cross into the brain from the blood very easily, and also that the brain has a feedback mechanism, so excessive GABA cant be produced, I doubted that GABA SOOTHE would have much of an effect. I meditate, so I understand what Alpha wave activity is--- Calm, meditative, with a clear transcendental awareness. I took three pills, on an empty stomach. I was already convinced that nothing would happen, so that should have canceled out the placebo effect. Then, about 15 minutes after I took the pills, I experienced strong alpha wave activity. I wasn't trying to meditate, in fact, I was in the kitchen making tea when it hit. So yeah, I guess it DOES promote alpha wave activity. Who knew?

So, here's my first report on this Gaba Soothe:
I've been taking it for almost a month. Usually I don't expect to feel a significant effect of a supplement until I've been taking it for a few months (supplements aren't like chemical prescriptions - they work with your body to subtly effect how your body works, and that can take time.) The interesting thing about this Gaba Soothe is that after only a couple of weeks I noticed a big change in my mood and attention. I had been feeling kind of foggy for a few months and a little cranky - but after a month of taking this I noticed that I was feeling much more clear-headed and less agitated. I can't say for sure that this is what caused the change, but I'll keep taking it for another five months, then go off of it for two or three months and see if I revert back. If I do, I'll try taking it again and see if it gets better again.
So, my first impression is that this is having a very good effect, but I'll update this review when I have something more to report and if I think it's this supplement that's making an effect I'll upgrade this review to five stars. I'll let you know...
