Jars of Clay + Broken Vessels = Romeo and Juliette in Ancient Rome

*Jars of Clay (volume 1) and Broken Vessels (volume 2) contain strong religious themes and scenes of sensuality and violence. Recommended for ages 15 and up.

Daughter of a wealthy and respected Roman citizen, Helena Vibius is only sixteen when she falls for Lucius, a servant in her father's house.

Ambitious, Lucius wants to seek his fortune in Rome, and asks Helena to tutor him. She agrees—against her better judgment—and through a series of secret lessons, the two fall in love, knowing if they're caught, Lucius will pay the penalty with his life.

And then there’s the unfortunate matter of Helena's pending arranged marriage to an unpleasant man from Carthage.

As her wedding day approaches, will Helena follow Lucius to Rome (risking both their lives), or keep her duty to her father?

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful, romantic, fascinating October 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Jars of Clay is an engaging Romeo + Juliet-style story of forbidden love between a noble young woman and freed-slave young man. Their growing love is swoon-worthy. Ancient Carthage is beautifully described, and the male-dominated Roman society is frustrating. Will Lucius and Helena risk everything to be together? This first installment will have you immediately scrambling to get the conclusion, Broken Vessels (by the same author). A wonderful novella! Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! October 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is a must read. I was skeptical about reading it at first since I didn't know how accurate it would have been about ancient Rome. However, it caught me by surprise with its historical accuracy. The authors did a fantastic job with setting the story in ancient Rome. The love story was also captivating and the ending in the sequel was heart-stopping. I would recommend this to anyone!!

Kind of an odd setting in Carthage. I didn't catch onto that at first. Wish I had the full book to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Romans did not drink coffee November 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While I felt like the prose in the story read quickly and smoothly I found that sometimes that the narrative felt a bit stiff. I found Helena's life a little boring as she didn't really have all that much in common with Lucius.I sort of wish the author would have spent a bit more time showing why they liked each other, besides their mere attraction. The historical aspects were generally accurate until the author had Lucius bring Helena coffee. Romans did not drink coffee. I totally got pulled out of the story and did a google search to confirm my hunch that Romans indeed did not drink coffee. I did feel an interest to read the second book and so gave the book an extra star. Overall, the book is an enjoyable and easy read but I would have prefered a bit more depth.

3.0 out of 5 stars What happened January 6, 2013

The characters in this story are well developed. By the time you feel that you know them, the story stops. It feels like the end of a chapter, not the end of the story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Jars of Clay December 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book wasn't too bad, the story was over-used, but the setting was interesting. I am a little upset that it is broken into multiple books. So far it doesn't seem long enough to require more then one book. Not to mention I'm pretty sure some of it was pretty historically inaccurate. I will probably read the rest so I can finish the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lingers on my mind December 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I would have given this a 4.5 star review, but since that is not available I chose to err on the positive side. This book is well written in a very straight forward and simple style with a solid understanding of the Roman way of life. Where I think Jars of Clay and its sequel should have been merged into one, I still would have payed $2.99 for it as a whole (I bought the second book Broken Vessels for that amount) and in my opinion it would have flowed better that way. I read other reviews that mentioned it was heavy on Christianity; this aspect of the book does not offend me because I am one myself, but the reader must know that Christianity had a massive impact on the Roman Empire and gave rights to women and children where there were virtually none before. As I mentioned earlier there are few frills to the story, but because Strauss gave life to history in a very realistic way I still retain imagery and names from the tale.

Pros: Aside from those listed above there were extrememly few editing issues which is a breath of fresh air in this new ebook realm.

Cons: I would prefer this was one book and not two, thus the 4.5 star review. Lastly and extremely minute: coffee didn't become popular outside the Islamic territories till around the mid 15th century.

I have told others (including my daughter) about these two books and will do so again. I do not know the author, nor did I receive the first or second book free as trade for my review. I simply felt like I needed to.
