2.0 out of 5 stars A bit dissapointed...
Perhaps it's the fact that I owned Adobe Photoshop 7 before I bought this software, but I noticed nothing unique about it. Only reason I can find to buy Paint Shop Pro 7 would be the cheaper price tag.

I use Paint Shop Pro 7.0 nearly every day for business purposes. The screen capture functions, which allow you to do multiple captures of full window (with & without cursor), and screen sections using mouse click and drag or hot keys has been a lifesaver for obtaining program images for use in manuals and other documentation.

For editing and creating images from scratch, the interface is fairly intuitive and user-friendly (although the sheer number of buttons, toolbars, and submenus is a bit overwhelming at first) The online help system is excellent - much superior to many of those I've encountered in other paint and graphics utility software packages, and will get you started quickly. I especially like the ease with which image layers can be labeled, moved, and discarded in the PSP format.

The browse with Paint Shop Pro is a handy feature for anyone working with directories containing large amounts of images.

The animation shop allows you to easily build animated GIF files for websites, create screensavers, etc.

For the price, I haven't found anything comparable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amateur Photographer? Web Designer? Auctioneer?, February 10, 2002
By
This review is from: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
Then you need this program! Paint Shop Pro has been and continues to be one of the premier image editing packages out there. It's very simple to learn with an icon based or menu bar based format. All of the tools are right where you need them, neatly packaged and not too "overcomplex" like other, more expesive packages.

The budding amateur digital photographer will love the import feature for digital cameras. Just hook your camera up to your PC and download your images direct to PSP7! Or you can scan them in the same way!

The web designer will definitely find the multitude of special graphic effects like button maker, glowing edges or mosaic! Saves in JPG and GIF among a slew of other extensions! And it also has a built in watermarking feature to protect your images online!

Amazon auctioneer? What better program to prep the pictures of your items than this one? You just can't beat how quickly you can crop, brighten or a plethora of other features to make your items look great! I use it religously!

I can't say enough about this program. If you want a simple but powerful graphics program, this is it! If you want advertising agency type graphics, then perhaps one of the $600 suites would be your taste. But for the average every day person, this graphics progam just makes the grade!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great program, great price, April 6, 2002

I've been using various versions of Paint Shop Pro over the years and it just keeps getting better. While I mainly use it for photo-editing, it has a very good drawing program as well. There are many automatic special effects and all the tools you're used to in other programs. And of course, you can open and save/convert your graphics in just about any format.

There are a lot of built in features useful for web designers - image mapping, slice and dice, optimization, rollovers - and it includes JASC's animation workshop that has many automatic, if not old hat, features (scrolling, glow, etc...)

PSP has almost all of the features you find in PhotoShop, but it's much easier to use. I could never get used to the interface in PhotoShop. PSP is just more intuitive. You can also use most PhotoShop filters with this program.

The casual user looking for automatic photo-editing might find all the control this program gives you a little daunting. You just can't click a button and get rid of red eye, for example. What this is is a serious, feature filled alternative to PhotoShop at a fraction of the cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's always difficult within the software wars but...., December 17, 2001

This review is from: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
...I have owned every PaintShop Pro since version 4.0 and I love it.

I have both Photoshop 6.0 and Illustrator 9.0, a web designer and I must say that I use my PaintShop Pro about 95% of the time. For the casual user or the experienced professional, PaintShop Pro offers features that are easy to use, learn and master. Virtually any plugin that is out there for Photoshop you can use in PaintShop Pro, it offers excellent vector graphics capabilities and for the price it blows Photoshop out of the water.

If you own a Mac and work in a professional graphics studio for print spend the money on Photoshop and Illustrator, if you are a web designer, a wanna-be web designer or an amateur digital maniac save your money and get PaintShop Pro and get a scanner or a digital camera with the savings.

Again I have all three including Micrografix Picture Publisher but PaintShop Pro is a must have for everyone, even those Photoshop gurus wanting to have an inexpensive program on their Windows based home computer. I have used it for printing on my HP Photosmart 1215 and it's turned out some beautiful photos and cards.

In short, PaintShop Pro is a small investment that turns out excellent results and most anyone can easily learn it. Go to their main website (JASC's site) and see the digital art people have created, some of it is incredible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paint Shop Pro Is a Winner!, December 1, 2001
This review is from: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
As an aspiring web designer, I was tired of using Microsoft Paint and other cheap graphics programs to get by. So, after getting hooked on a trial, I received it for my birthday. After picking up different aspects of it, I was quite impressed with its capabilities.

Many people see Adobe Photoshop as the primere of all graphics programs. (...) . This is the superior alternative. I started out simple with it. I learn basic colors and text. Then I moved on to touching up photos, transparency, gradients and more. Then, I progressed to optimization, image slicing & mapping, and other advanced features. Sound over your head? It was for me, but this program can turn you from a beginner into and expert (at least it did for me).

PROS:
- great interface
- cheap price
- powerful yet simple

CONS:
- none yet

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, October 18, 2001
This review is from: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
I was captured by Paint Shop Pro version 3.x and have been a slave to the magic of this graphical world ever since. I have been using PSP 7.0 since it was released, so why would I upgrade to the 7.04 Anniversary Edition? I debated, as I always do about upgrades, and finally decided to try it because of the special Bonus Package Highlights.

These created a provocative adventure that drew me in and stimulated that secret part of my mind where my creativity hides from the muses. Artistic filters add intriguing dimensions to my graphic arts, and play with my fantastical imagination. I enter the antimatter effect, and feel as if I am one of Picasso's canvases and surrealistic facets surround me. I am not in control of this artistic journey because the sensations of unlimited possibilities lure me to the next image.

Coming back to reality:
* To install the new version all previous copies of PSP must be removed, so make sure your data is stored in a separate location from the program files.
* You can create photo albums that can be exported it to HTML code.
* The software package contains two books: Getting Started Guide and Paint Shop Pro 7 & Animation Shop 3 Reference book. The small pamphlet Paint Shop Pro 7 Anniversary Edition Bonus Pack Highlights is an easy way to get familiar with the additional software.
* This includes a tutorial program that will teach PSP basics and is always available as reference material.
* There are both usable and demo versions of many filters. The demos will stamp the artwork with the word "Demo," but the opportunity to discover what Flaming Pear, Eye Candy, and Alien Skin can provide is a treat.

The editorial reviews describe the contents, but not the experience. This has been my 5 star program for years, and still is.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
I first have to admit that my primary reason for buying this software was for editing digital camera images, so I ignore a large part of the artistic functions offered. I wanted to replace the Photoshop LE software that came with my camera. There are many nifty features for photo editing, many of them automated, which work quite nicely when you can figure them out. There is little pop-up help, but pretty good full help screens. I don't like most of the key shortcuts used - very clunky, like shift-R to finalize a crop. If you don't have a wheel mouse, zooming is a pain using the menus only. Not for beginners who will soon be frustrated.

4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT STABILITY; EXCELLENT VALUE., March 7, 2003
By
reviewer (Zurich, Switzerland.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
By any means, "Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0" is a nice imaging tool. This continuity software showcased those genes, which enabled its earlier versions win numerous awards. Apart from being easy-to-deploy and use, it has excellent stability. Its enhanced features ensured that it is highly productive. Web-designers would appreciate the inclusion of JavaScript rollovers, and several other web-imaging tools in this '7.0 Pro' version.
However, versatile image-editors should note that this 'Paint Shop' does not have the advanced premium features, which are evident in both 'Adobe Photoshop' and 'Corel Photo-Paint' programs. Still, its value-for-money did exceed those of 'Photoshop' and 'Photo-Paint'.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the Majority of Computer Users It is Fabulous, July 2, 2002
This review is from: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
I'm an artist so although I used this product extensively for a year or more, the day dawned where I needed to upgrade to the industry powerhouse of graphics' programs, Photoshop. Photoshop is a very difficult, expensive and challenging program though and unless you are a photographer or an artist, you can probably do as well or better with Paint Shop Pro 7. It is easier to learn and operate and does an enormous range of image editing tasks. I've produced excellent original art work on it. I also have edited or manipulated images with ease. It comes in at 1/6th the cost of Photoshop and for a vast pool of users out there, it more than does the job. For my own students, for one, who are going to image edit digital pictures they take of houses, this program is more than enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, March 5, 2003

This review is from: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
This is perhaps the best PC graphics editing tool. It is versatile, but that is not what will grab your interest. The ease of use blows away the competition. The processing algorithms are written better than those of Photoshop and Corel. It does the work faster and more efficiently. Text editing is a breeze, and text on graphics is easier to handle than on Photoshop...and the price of this product is another reason this is set apart from the others. Jasc has packed so much product into such a small prices. Great work. Great tool. If you are one who dabbles in graphics, and hasn't the time or money to spend looking at the other bigger graphics platforms, than this is the best for you
