Book Description

World Folklore Series January 15, 1999

Lush tropical lands, exotic flora and fauna, colorful clothing, and the spirit and influence of Hinduism are some of the wonders to be seen in Southern India. Among the many lively sounds are the those of traditional and contemporary stories as found in this collection. Tales of tricksters, heroes, and sages as well as modern jokes, true stories, and teaching stories—42 tales total, balanced in length, mood, and age appeal—can be found in this unique anthology. With the stories, the authors give a historical overview of the region and detailed storytelling notes. Color photos and elegant line drawings complement the text, as does a resource listing of books, centers, Web sites, and a calendar of South Indian festivals. A beautiful introduction to a fascinating culture and people.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

This entry in a series that combines cultural and historical information with short folktales from around the world focuses on South India. The introductory section presents a brief history, an overview of South Indian states, a look at religion and the arts, and a chapter on the various storytelling styles of the area. The almost 50 stories are organized by subjects such as "Devotion and Faith," "Respect for Family and Elders," and "Hospitality and Friendship." There is an earnest quality in the accounts of devotion, of greed being punished, of achieving virtue through religious practice, doing one's duty, lessons on karma, and the importance of humility. There are also some charming and intriguing tales in the collection. The thorough appendixes briefly describe festivals and resources, including Internet and pen-pal sources. Useful for storytellers or for classroom units with older children.-Marilyn Iarusso, New York Public Library
