Book Description

When Sam Melody, a hardworking private detective, meets the beautiful Jasmine Pellitier, the consequences could be deadly. Although Jasmine seems like the perfect woman, she is actually a 2,500-year-old witch… and is being pursued by ancient enemies who will stop at nothing to learn the secret of her powers.

A fascinating marriage of witch-tale and detective yarn, Jasmine’s Tale: Darkness and Light takes the reader from Sam and Jasmine’s adventures in modern-day New York City to her ancient European beginnings and back again, as they try to elude their enemies in a running battle between good and evil.

From ancient times though the Crusades to the Salem Witch Trials and beyond, follow Jasmine and the man she loves in to a final showdown between the powers of Darkness and Light.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and Beautiful All Rolled into One May 2, 2012
Format:Paperback
The cover of this book had caught my eye on more than one occasion. I was excited when I finally got around to reading it... and I was not disappointed. Though the cover is stunning, as it turns out, it is the least impressive aspect of this book. Don't take this as criticism; this is a very, very good thing. The beginning of the story hits you with slap-in-the-face action that sucks you right in. The flawless prose and character development keeps you there. Add to these a tight and unique plot, non-stop action, spray on a few tears and sprinkle a pinch of humour, and voila! Jasmine has everything.

When it comes to pacing, I find backstory can sometimes be tedious, but Jasmine's history was both engaging and interesting. It is well researched and put together with a diligence that makes the story flow effortlessly. Dobbins makes writing seem easy.

I have already alluded to Dobbins' prose, but it is such that it merits a double mention. The authors soul and personality are clearly poured into his words. It is not often that a small press author can induce profound thought in their readers, but if profound thought is injected, then profound thought is encouraged. One line from the book will always stick with me: 'She was obviously covered by that blanket protection that fate sometimes throws over the truly clueless.' Ingenious, and the answer to a frustrating lack of articulation I have been struggling with for years.

I'd like to take a tiny detour, if I may - I have said that it's not often small presses can deliver such gems as Jasmine's Tale. This is the fifth book I have read which is published by Post Mortem Press, and I'm beginning to believe they are regular gem dealers.

Back to business: Jasmine's Tale: Darkness and Light - firmly, truly, 100%, 5 big shiny ones!

5.0 out of 5 stars I was 'Charmed' by Jasmine's Tale April 26, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is another jewel published by Post Mortem Press. Brian Dobbins finely crafted a tale that spans nearly 25 centuries. Jasmine and her companions are special creations of the Earth that seek peace and prosperity in an ever changing world that doesn't understand them. Their good deeds and strange ways are often misjudged and are forced to be constantly on the move. Not all that share the same gifts are benevolent. McGowen is a powerful witch hell bent on enslaving mankind. He senses the power within Jasmine and attempts to enchant her to do his bidding. She manages to escape and lives in constant fear that he'll be back one day for revenge. The years pass with life threatening encounters that eventually lead to the present. Jasmine has waited 2,500 years to meet her mortal husband. Will he love her as foretold? What of McGowen? Was he still in pursuit? Jasmine begins a new stage in her evolution being drawn out of the physical world into the shadows. The pieces all move together in the end for the final battle.

Brian Dobbins creates a believable world and had me feeling empathy for the characters. This was a satisfying read, and I will be reading his next work Corryville.
