4.0 out of 5 stars Country meets rock thanks to a talented singer
There are two things that help Jason Aldean stand out from his contemporary country/rock peers: the first is that he manages to put heart and soul into his voice, without coming off like a polished singer. The second is that he doesn't write his own stuff (save four songs he co-wrote). Most of this album was written by songwriters who have gained minor fame recently...

3.0 out of 5 stars "You like the way that sounds?" - Thank Big and Rich
I had heard Aldean's songs on the radio, and liked them, so I figured I would buy the CD. The first three tracks are the radio cuts, and hold no surprises. The rest of the CD is quite solid as well. My biggest issue is that if you listen to later tracks that Aldean actually had a hand in writing, the vocals pop and come to life much better. The songs aren't as strong,...

4.0 out of 5 stars Country meets rock thanks to a talented singer, July 30, 2005
This review is from: Jason Aldean (Audio CD)
There are two things that help Jason Aldean stand out from his contemporary country/rock peers: the first is that he manages to put heart and soul into his voice, without coming off like a polished singer. The second is that he doesn't write his own stuff (save four songs he co-wrote). Most of this album was written by songwriters who have gained minor fame recently due to their edgy, alternative styles and materials: John Rich, Vicky McGehee, Rodney Clawson, David Lee Murphy, Kim Tribble, and Bobby Pinson (hell, even Chad Brock has a co-writing credit; nice to see some material from him).

Aldean takes these tunes and makes them his own. True, his rendition of "Asphalt Cowboy" falls short of Blake Shelton's recording on THE DREAMER, but then, Shelton is more of a vocalist than Aldean is. Aldean's voice is down-home and likeable; his attitude is present throughout, yet never fully expressed (thanks to some wonderful production by Michael Knox). He takes tunes such as "I Believe In Ghosts" and "Amarillo Sky" and makes them fascinating gems; few country boys will have trouble relating to "She Loved Me" and "Hicktown." "I'm Just a Man" is undeniably catchy; even the corny "You're the Love I Wanna Be In" comes off fresh and invigorating, thanks to Aldean's heartfelt performance.

With this album, Jason Aldean establishes himself as a formidible new force on the Nashville scene. He won't go kicking down doors...yet. But he will turn some heads, and catch radio's attention. He has the heart, the material, and the raw talent to make it his own way. We're gonna be hearing more from him on down the road, I guarantee it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Newcomer Of The Year, July 26, 2005
This review is from: Jason Aldean (Audio CD)
This album is outstanding. After being in Nashville for years, Aldean's finances were getting bad and he was about to move back home in Georgia. That was gonna be the case, until a producer met him in a club and was able to convince Jason that with enough work, they could get a record deal. Jason agreed, but promised to move back home in 6 months if a deal wasn't done. Luckily Broken Bow Records signed this guy. This CD is awesome. Every track is great and he has a strong voice. From fun songs like "Hicktown", to love songs like "Why", a lot of emotions are expressed in this album. This is a must for any country fan. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jason Aldean ROCKS, March 6, 2006

I LOVE this CD. Bought it Saturday (3/4) at Wal-Mart for $9.72, a great price. Anyway, I absolutely LOVE this CD. Got it mainly because of "Hicktown", but also because of the new song "Why" that's been on the radio. I was DEFINITELY not disappointed. I like EVERY song on the CD, though some a little more than others. My favorites are "Hicktown" (of course), "Why", "Lonesome USA", "Asphalt Cowboy", "I Believe in Ghosts", and some others I've forgotten currently. Great music, great CD. It makes it a lot easier as a newbie singer when you've got the likes of Big & Rich, David Lee Murphy, and Bobby Pinson co-writing for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite CD I've bought in a LOOOONNNNGGG time!, June 23, 2006

WOW! How awesome to buy a CD just because you love ONE song and find out the whole CD is full of great songs! I love that these songs don't sound fake at all. Jason's voice is flawed, edgy and such emotion comes from his voice that you feel the music way down deep in your heart. Great job!

I purchased this CD when it first came out and still listen to it all the time. I never get bored with it and never find myself skipping over any songs. He has a great voice and acts "like the boy next door". I highly recommend buying this CD. You won't regret it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars HickTown Rocks!, November 16, 2006
This review is from: Jason Aldean (Audio CD)
This Cd is great from start to finish! The song writing, orchestration and vocals are top notch and I have become a new fan. I am a recent convert to country music as it is so much better than heavy metal which I used to love and has lost its melody. HickTown jams as well as Amarillo Sky, Lonesome USA and Asphalt Cowboy. Every song on this CD is very, very good so go get it and crank it up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch out for Jason :), November 8, 2006
This review is from: Jason Aldean (Audio CD)
I first bought this CD after I found myself singing the fun lyrics to "Hicktown" and "Why"... At this point, I can tell you I love every single song on this album, which is a rare find. I listen to it over and over and never get bored! My favorite songs besides the two already mentioned are "Amarillo Sky" and "Asphalt Cowboy", and in my opinion is better than Blake Shelton's version.

I was so happy to see Jason Aldean performing on this year's CMA awards because he has proven to me that he has a lot of talent and a lot of potential to go far. Buy this album - you definitely won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars powerful, February 22, 2006
This review is from: Jason Aldean (Audio CD)
A new artist from the Broken Bow Records team, Jason Aldean comes after Craig Morgan on the same label. Considering that Big and Rich have taken a large part in the making of this album, no wonder "Hicktown", the album's opening hit, is so energetic! Still, the rest of the album is rather slow, including some beautiful ballads, like "Amarillo Sky" or "Even if I Wanted to". "Lonesome USA" brings us back to a more pulsating beat. Overall, and even for the voice, it sounds a lot like Blake Shelton. So, don't be surprised if he sings Shelton's "Asphalt Cowboy", and beautifully at that. Aldean's voice is very "rock", very powerful. Listening to him is a treat. With Adan Schoenfeld on guitars, or Tony Harrell on keyboards. Well, a great product. David Lee Murphy also had his part in the writing, as had Chad Brock or Bobby Pinson. Broken Bow gets us used (Fortunately? Unfortunately?) to quality artists. So listen to him.Top priority.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent offering from this newcomer!, October 15, 2005

Lately I've realized that I haven't been liking most of the new people coming out of Nashville. Either they're too pop,too rock, or just plain bad, but the latest offerings have not been good. However, three fresh faces that I have liked have been Bobby Pinson, Keith Anderson, and Jason Aldeon. "Hicktown" may be a rocking country single, but it does not reflect the rest of his CD. If you like a more classic sound, 'Lonesome USA', 'I Believe in Ghosts', 'Why Do I do That to You', and his remake of 'Asphalt Cowboy' (from Blake Shelton's "The Dreamer"), are three that come to mind. If you like 'Hicktown', then keep it going with 'She Loved Me' and, to some extent, 'Amarillo Sky' and 'You're the Love I Want to be In'. He has put together one of the best all-around CDs of 2005, and I hope he has more of the same for a second go. I highly recomend this one to both casual and classic country fans alike. It will not let you down.
