I've been having electrolysis (permanent hair removal) and have been looking for an aloe lotion that would help the skin heal better afterward. I have sensitive skin, so I'd been looking for something fairly pure, without a lot of perfumes and preservatives. I've had a mildly bad reaction to other aloe gels in the past, like the green Walgreens store brand.

I just got some of this Jason Aloe gel in the mail, and on the same day I happened to pick up some $3 "100% Aloe" gel from CVS Pharmacy. I tried them side-by-side on the same area of skin.

Both aloe gels had a fairly soothing effect at first. Then I noticed the side with the Jason gel got a bit sticky, then a bit itchy... then I looked in the mirror, and the skin on that side was bright red! The side with the CVS generic aloe gel was fine. I washed it all off immediately, and I don't plan to use it again.

Your mileage may vary, and I certainly won't say that this gel will definitely irritate your skin.. but I guess I find it hard to believe that the additives in here will do more good than harm for anyone who uses it.

Positives:
- It seems to contain aloe
- Convenient pump bottle
- Soothing for about the first 2.5 minutes

Negatives:
- Much more expensive than the CVS generic aloe (which didn't irritate my skin)
- Very bad skin irritation (for me at least)
- Somewhat unpleasant fragrance. The unscented aloe is much less off-putting to me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously irritated my skin, January 4, 2011

I also had a bad reaction to this product. After only a couple of minutes, my skin turned red like I had a sunburn. I rinsed it off as quickly as I could, but my skin stayed red for a while afterward. I have used a number of different aloe vera gels, but have never had a reaction like this before.

I am using aloe on for recovery from radiation therapy treatments on my breast. I have tried several aloe vera gels and this one leaves a film on my skin that is maddening. As the gel dries, the film forms and then tightens, tugging at my skin and leaving it feeling itchy. . . not what I am looking for. My husband tried it too and had the same trouble.

5.0 out of 5 stars CLEAN AND REFRESHING!, September 1, 2011

I've been using this gel for seven years, and it's simply the best.

The consistency is perfect, spreading easily and absorbing fully. It tones your face and leaves you feeling cool and hydrated. Other brands tend not to absorb as well, leaving a "mask" that weighs you down.

I spread this gel over my face and even my eyelids without a worry because it never stings or irritates. It hydrates, relieves sunburn, soothes irritated skin and best of all (in my case) repairs cracked, dry feet better than harsh products designed for "problem" feet. Just use this aloe regularly.

My one complaint is that Jason recently switched from a nice clear bottle to a solid white/yellowish one that I don't find attractive. I much preferred when I could see the attractive, clear green gel inside.

This item can get pricey at upscale retailers, but you save here on Amazon and you can save even more at iHerb, where first-time customers who enter "XAY240" get five bucks off, no strings attached. Plus iHerb lets you select a free sample of their other natural products each time you order.

One more tip: Keep a bottle of this gel in your fridge. Nothing relieves sunburn like COLD aloe vera gel.

5.0 out of 5 stars 98% aloe, better than the actual plant, July 26, 2011
This review is from: Jason Aloe Vera 98% Moisturizing Gel, 8-Ounce Bottle (Pack of 3) (Health and Beauty)
Have you ever used aloe gel directly from the plant? I used to grow it. It IS sticky and smelly. This product is 98% aloe, so it gets sticky as it is drying, but once it is dry, it is no longer sticky, the smell dissipates quickly as well. In fact, since it smells and feels better than aloe from the plant, I don't grow the plant anymore because I like this better.

I love this product and have never had a reaction, but feel it is very gentle and does not cause my sensitive skin to break out. I feels fresh and clean on my face, not greasy or drying like other moisturizers. I use it daily under my makeup and for medicinal purposes to heal skin blemishes, insect bites and sores.

Perhaps the other reviewers are allergic to real aloe vera gel and are accustomed to using gels with low concentrations?
