As a teacher, this is one book I won't have on my shelf.,

This review is from: Jason and Marceline (Paperback)
I am a 7th grade reading teacher, and I have read both Space Station Seventh Grade and its sequel Jason and Marceline. Space Station Seventh Grade is a good book and is very true to life in middle school. Jason and Marceline consists of guys talking about who's "doing it" and the size of girls' breasts and how they'd like to get their hands on them. This may be the type of conversation that goes on in middle school, but I think it is demeaning to the girls. The book summary on Amazon.com says that Jason is surprised to find that Marceline rejects him, but that's not quite the whole story. Jason pressures Marceline to let him give her a hickey, and he gets angry and stomps off when she won't let him. They finally get back together, and she makes him promise he won't give her a hickey. I'm concerned that the message it sends is that girls who don't give in to their boyfriends will lose them, and that's not a message I want to endorse.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Jason and Marceline (Paperback)
Jason and Marceline was such and awesome book, telling about a Jason's relationship with his girlfriend. the book talks about people a little bit older then me, but i still connected with it. I would recommend this book to kids 13 or older, just because it deals with somethings that are inappropriate for younger kids. it goes a little farther then just dating, into kissing and things like that. Even then, i would hope that every teen reads this great book!!!

Jason and Marceline not for everyone, but wait a minute...,

I teach middle-school Language Arts, and, while I wouldn't necessarily read this book WITH my class, I would recommend it to students to read for outside reading. Spinelli is a master with the written word; I read the majority of his books as a teenager and will reread them on occasion even now. I must disagree with the teacher who felt Spinelli's portrayal of girls in Jason and Marceline was poor. In the end, Jason learns that Jason must be Jason and Marceline must be Marceline. He learns to accept her as she is--eccentricities and all. Jason is flawed, and he is definitely not politically correct. (Name a middle schooler who is!) Regardless, Spinelli can somehow recapture the ambivalence of adolescence while possessing the wisdom of an adult...the mark of a truly gifted writer.

Jason and Marceline is the best book I have ever read! I am a 13 yr female and it took me two days to read! I could not put it down!I even read it during my softball game!It is a book that I related to very well...I mean in the way that Jason and Marceline's relathionship is! A very real book and is different because it was not written for children but not for adults either!A teenage story! It is a book for all sexes also...after reading it I gave it to my boyfriend to read! He loved it also, the story is much like our relashionship...most likly why i loved it so much! The story is about how Jason and Marceline were friends then became boyfriend and girlfriend...the problem is that they are always fighting! It tells their story and how thay survived their freshman year! I also loved it cause it was funny, sad, and had romance! I give it 5 Stars 100%! PLZ READ IT! I can't stop talking about it and either will you! Must I also say that I am not the kind of person who likes to read books? Give me a break! I am 13!

As I was reading some of these reviews I have noticed that many- teachers, kids, parents are saying that this book is way too "mature", "fake", "absurd". But no this is not true. I'm sure Spinelli's intention in writing this book was to not make 9th grade guys sound like pigs only thinking about breasts, hickeys, sex, smoking, beer, and other things that we have gone through with in our childhood. I feel that Spinelli tried to relate, doing something a great author can only do, to the troubles and worries that a 9th grader goes through. It is a great book and I would reccommend it to guys maybe 13-15 that maybe dont pick up too many books. I do not think though, that it is geared towards girls for the fact that it tooks about boobs, and Jason's troubles in not being able to get his tounge through the "Berlin Wall" of Marceline's teeth.

"Maybe - maybe - she's as nervous as I am.",
This review is from: Jason and Marceline (Paperback)
I grew up with this book. It mirrored my confusion about life and relationships (including the quote in the subject, which is from Jason's first date; maybe it doesn't seem too profound to you, but when I first read that at the age of 14, it was incredibly enlightening). It offered some light on issues I hadn't considered (like the impact of a boyfreind-girlfriend situation on an already existing close relationship). Most importantly, Jason felt like a good friend who listened to my embarassing stories, all the while offering up some of his own stories and advice. I can't stress enough how much this book meant to me, then and now. Even more so than the first book in this two-book series, Space Station Seventh Grade, this book helped me understand in a time when nothing made sense.Anyone who thinks this is a book that handles topics too "mature" for 14 year olds simply doesn't understand the situations people of this age find themselves in. And, yes, they are people. They are just smaller and less experienced, the latter problem being one that this book helps alleviate. If you are a parent, you owe it to yourself, and your offspring, to buy this book for your son or daughter. If you are at the age where you are feeling that intense pressure to hook up and go out, you owe it to your sanity.

I personally liked this book. I have read other books by Spinelli such as Maniac Magee, Who Put That Hair in My Toothbrush?, and There's a Girl In My Hammerlock. Although Spinelli's books are often crude, please keep in mind that so are teenage boys and girls. Boys do think about women's breasts and girls think about sex too. The teenage years are times of growing sexuality. Being a teenage girl myself I have had curiousity over what it's like to get a "hickey." I can relate to Marceline in this book because she has good morals and doesn't change herself for anybody, especially her boyfriend. Overall this book is a good one. I give kudos to Mr. Spinelli for writing such an inspiring novel.

Jason and Marceline,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Jason and Marceline (Paperback)
Have you ever wondered if you and your friend could be more than just friends? Jason Herkimer and Marceline McAllister have only been friends for almost two years and their relationship is just starting. This relationship is filled with humor and heartbreak up against hormones. They only good thing that seems to be coming out of this new relationship is that Marceline and Jason know when to tell each other off.In this sequel to Space Station Seventh Grade, Jason and Marceline begin to get to know themselves a lot more together. Jason's sexual feelings have awakened but Marceline is always self-concerned and most concerned with doing what she feels right. But somehow they begin to feel an attraction towards one another but the pressure Jason puts on Marceline to be more sexual in their relationship brings them apart. Will this love-hate relationship last? I found this book very interesting yet very funny and outrageous because of the descriptions Jerry Spinelli uses to tell the little or big arguments that Jason and Marceline have. This book could probably be read from the ages of 12-15. I think most junior high students would be able to relate themselves to the same things Jason and Marceline go through such as peer pressure. Each chapter you read through brings about a new conflict for Jason and Marceline and you can see from Jason's point of view, how they come about. You get to experience the challenges, humor, and heartbreak of first love. - Paulina Perezalonso

I HATED this book! It's totally SICK! I'm sorry, but the boys in this book are PERVERTED! The way they talk is disgusting. This whole book is sick and stupid and you should not waste your time or money. Oh, and to all you past reveiwers who said this was the normal way teenage boys talk, I've got news for you: I know a lot of guys who DON'T talk that way and guys who do are perverted! I give this book ZERO stars.
