Good Soundtrack,
By A Customer
This review is from: Jason X [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
I think this is a good soundtrack. I had it's moments but I liked the Jason Goes To Hell score alot better! Too bad it might not ever happen Manfredini releasing a CD set with the soundtracks of all the Friday The 13th's he did Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 9 (Jason goes To Hell), Jason X. But he said in an interview on a Friday The 13th website that he won't be able to release all the Friday's he did to CD enless a studio agrees to give him the money and equipment to redew them all because some of the disks got damaged back in the 80's and they were the only copies he had. And there is know talk of Fred Mollen releasing any CD's of Friday The 13th Part 7 The New Blood or Friday The 13th Part 8 Jason Takes Manhatten soundtracks which are the two he did. Although there is a website that sell's a Friday The 13th soundtrack called Roger's Basement. Heres the address www.rogersbasement.com/Cds.htmI own the soundtrack it is pretty good but don't expect every music cue from every Friday the 13th to be in it. It's mostlly Part 1 and 2.

Good Tunes, and Tones, But Where's the Original FRIDAY Music,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Jason X [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
When I bought this CD, I was expecting more of the original tunes, like the CH CH CH - HA HA HA, and the themes related to Camp Crystal Lake, but there isnt much of that on this Soundtrack. The only track that sounds like it's from a Friday the 13th movie is VIRTUAL CRYSTAL LAKE. But aside from that, there are some good themes, and scare tactics. There is nothing much else I can say except, if you are expecting the themes from the Original Friday, don't buy this CD.

Well, it's better than Jason Goes To Hell,

JGTH has one of the worst, most appalling scores in history. I'll admit had ONE nice cue at the end but Harry Manfredini ought to be ashamed of himself for 'composing' pretty much the worst sounds planet earth has ever known.
I'm pleased to say Jason X is an improvement on that (it could hardly get worse). But it's hardly great stuff. It feels more like a sci-fi video game score from 7 years ago than it does a horror movie. Puh-lease Harry, THROW AWAY THAT SYNTHESIZER! You cannot play it! Where are the gritty but brilliant screetching strings? The strings here are too cleaned up and slick. Thankfully, there are a few brief hints at past Friday the 13th themes and a couple of moments that remind you of the better, more menacing cues, from the earlier films. Ironically, the tracks that work best in the score are the gentler ones with Hans Zimmer's pleasant guitar strummings and a nice, calming feel. It feels futuristic in the same vain as Jerry Goldsmith's score to Total Recall. Hey Varese Sarabande, release the scores to the first 8 movies. They were cool and often completely mental. Jason X is low quality stuff from a composer who can do better with an orchestra than he can with Yahama. Pick it up cheap as it does have some slight merit and niceness to it. Just don't expect anything powerful or chilling, which is what it really should have been.

I don't normally purchase soundtracks. Very few scores really grab me while watching a movie. Harry Manfredini was a name I knew of in passing but didn't seem particularly taken by his work. Until I saw "Jason X", that is. I thought the film had some exceptional music and made a point to pick up the score eventually. I have to say that this cd presents the music in a much more dramatic fashion than appeared to be the case in the film (I've only seen "Jason X" once so far). And I am very, very pleased with my purchase. This music is veering from the beautiful to the menacing often within the same note, and is an incredibly captivating listen- over and over. My favorite tracks are 'Opening Credits', 'Jason Thaws Out', 'He's Back', 'The Grunts', 'KM Kicks Butt', 'Birth Of The UberJason', 'Oops? What Oops?', 'End Credits' and the best of them all, 'Virtual Crystal Lake' (also probably the most imaginative segment of the movie). It's hard to explain why I like this score so much; the arrangements, the instrumentation, the programming, the production and certainly the compositions all are top-notch. But I really pin it down to the atmosphere. It's dark, foreboding, exciting, tranquil... but always fascinating. One of the best cd's I've bought from 2002. I highly recommend that all who read this and the other reviews to pick this up. Manfredini is one composer I'm definitely going to investigate further.

This score again reflects the masterful technique and scoring capabilities of Harry Manfredini. It is such a shame that we do not see more of his scores in print. Excellent score!!

The film arrangement doesn't do this music justice,

Okay, just for the record, not all of us Friday the 13th fans are loony. I'm a huge fan of the series and I consider myself to be rather grounded. So, with that in mind, I thought I would come and offer up my opinions on why the score for Jason X (the tenth installment in the unstoppable Friday the 13th series) is much better than many will give it credit for. First of all, we have to get something straight - whoever did the score arrangement for the film must have been sleeping on the job. Any fan knows that composer and father of the infamous `ki-ki-ki ma-ma-ma' sound effect , Harry Manfredini, was behind the score for "Jason X". The problem, however, is that it didn't seem to translate to film very well. I don't know if this was done for fear of it blowing the theater speakers out or what, but let me tell you that the CD transfer of Manfredini's score is ten times more powerful than the one featured on the film. There are eighteen tracks on this CD, which is sadly missing the music played over the ending credits of the film. It seems that Manfredini's original ending credits music was placed on this CD rather than the song Jason Jams. There are only actually a few tracks that disappoint me on this CD. Those would be "Trip to Grendel" and "Nano Ant Technology". I have no idea why, but the arrangement on these two tracks are different than in the film. The "Grendel" track features a bit of different music from what was used (which, incidentally, happened to be one of my favorite cues) and the "Nano" track plays certain instruments far too dominantly. It blocks out one of my favorite melodies from that piece. The music over Azrael and Dallas' deaths finishes up in the middle of "The Grunts", which is the cue that plays while the Grunts are hunting Jason through the cargo bay. "Kay Em Kicks Butt", "Birth of Uber Jason", "Give Me That Old Time Machete", "Opening Credits"... they're some of the best tracks on the CD, but the CD as a whole is brilliant. I don't know why so many people seem to be so hard on it. Even if you didn't like the score in the film, pick up the CD. I assure you that it sounds far less cheap and the power is so raw I nearly blew out my headphones/computer speakers on more than one occasion. A LOT of bass comes back that should have been present in the theatrical sound, and some new instruments seem to pop up in various tracks. Manfredini complains about how he didn't like the transfer of the music from Jason Goes to Hell when it went to CD. Well, it doesn't seem as though Jason X has any of those problems, because this score is raw power.

The rare actual soundtrack release to a Friday the 13th film, and one of Harry Manfredini's few scores to see any light, this is actually an excellent disc even removed from the film.
First, the score is consistent with the tone of the film, which was very well done considering a) it's a part X of a series, and b) it's set in space, not to mention c) it's the continuation of an always-almost dead-and-buried genre. Tongue-in-cheek but still reverant enough, you sense at least the filmmakers and actors did have some fun with this. The trademark Jason lunacy ensues, this time with Manfredini playing along with a combination of screechy strings, sci-fi-ish synth cues, and even some dreamy 'fantasy space music'. It sounds better than you can describe. If you enjoyed the film, this is a very strong disc of lively cues, recognizable motifs from previous films, and a clean, crisp sound. Highly recommended for more than fans...a much better product than anyone would expect.

Well finaly my eyes were opened to this one, when the classic Harry came back. He had also written the all time calssic score for the first Friday the 13th. And when I say when my eyes finaly opened is that Harry not only brought up spice to the film with the score the film itself was so different ...better instead of all those dumb sequels always at camp crystal lake finaly sumtin different.

This is a great score from composer Harry Manfredini. Some suprising tonal cues. The music featured here sounded alot like Friday 5 with the tranposing french horns and bass trombone, only in its full synthetic glory. The music on the cd has much more of a "kick" in it than when I saw it in the theater. You only hear ki ki ki ma ma ma a FEW times on this cd, which I thought was a little dissapointing for my taste. "Virtual Crystal Lake" was a neat track in which you hear a cue from the very first Friday the 13th film. A lengthy score and while the movie might not have been that faithful to the old school Fridays, you can't say that about the score.
