Oh My God!,
By
This review is from: Java 1.1 Certification Training Guide (Hardcover)
I just spent two days working through the first five chapters of the book. At first, the typos were amusing, but after a while, they became extremely frustrating and tedious. I must admit, I learned a lot cross-checking the gargage that he was dishing out. I can not believe that New Riders wouldn't publish an errata sheet for this book. It's a published rough draft that was never was never seen by a technical editor--an absolute embarrassment for New Riders and Cary Jardin. I blame New Riders and will avoid their publications.I guess I've gotta shop for another book, now. You should, too.

The best book I have ever read, including the Bible,

Ladies and gentlemen, Never in the course of history has someone contributed in such a significant manner to the furthering of mankind. Mr. Jardin has outdone even Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in thrusting himself into the limelight as a leader of all humanity. With a clever combination of technical "boo-boos" interspersed with a collage of typographical errors, Mr. Jardin has kept apace with if not surpassed such literary and scientific talents as Hawthorne, Ibsen, Arthur C. Clarke, Steven Hawking and Snoop Doggy Dog. Java is truly the world's language; "C.J." has found new and exciting interpretations into not only the Java programming language but also the English "speaking" language. - Zorkon

The Most Expensive Firelog I Ever Bought,
By A Customer
This review is from: Java 1.1 Certification Training Guide (Hardcover)
I'll skip over the obvious problems that I found in this book, only a fraction of which are listed below, and simply let everyone know that I was forced to burn it. It was rightly settling to know that I recovered at least some of the cost of this inexcusable monstrosity on my heating bill. As far as the rest, if I ever meet Cary Jardin, I really look forward to introducing him to some full-blown Australian rugby sometime...

I cannot believe this book was published.,

This book is so poor I have been forced to take New Riders press off our recommended book sellers list. It is obvious that it has never been looked at by a technical editor. What is even worse is that New Riders and Macmillan Computer Publishing have not issued any update or even errata for the text. Purchase the Boone or Roberts/Heller text instead.

The worst ever,

I have read plenty of poorly-written computer books but I have never before seen so many mistakes. I don't believe this book was ever edited or proofread. And don't expect an errata sheet from the New Riders Web Page (like Sybex.) I bought it from the closeout bin of my local computer store for $3.99 and I feel that I was robbed. I hope Mr. Jardin never writes another book. If you want to pass the Sun exams, don't even think about this book. The Java 1.1 Certification Study Guide by Simon Roberts is what you need. Anyway, Java 2 is the current release so get the new version of the Roberts book as soon as it's published (see ISBN 0782124631)

Due to the huge number of syntactic and conceptual erros, this book is completely unusable as a certification guide or any other type of guide to Java. It is complete garbage.

Thankfully, I didn't buy this book, having read all the reviews on the site. I did read the interview with the author though - he doesn't like writing and he doesn't read. Oh well, there you go then...

Ban this book!,

This book was not even edited for accuracy. Numerous typos, even on the example tests. Extremely innaccurate summaries of even the primitive datatypes. I will never trust a New Riders book again.Example: Which answer best descibes the floowing object hierarchy? class class1{} class class2 extends class1{} class class3 extends class3{} Obviosly, class3 extends itself, which would give you a "Cyclic class Inheritance" error at compile time. This same hierarchy is used several times throughout the Chapter three test as if class3 inherited from class2. This is just one example of this horrible book. |
