I have a C++ background and was looking for a good Java reference. This book is it. Very easy reading - the authors don't baby you, but they take the time to explain everything very well, and they keep the pace pretty brisk too. The explanations are concise and there is tons of example code to illustrate all the points. And everything from primitives to swing to multithreading is covered. I wish more programming books were written like this...not to mention the price. Easily the best value for your dollar.

Strange brew, but good for someone who already knows syntax,

This book is hacked together from other publications and it shows. Writing styles vary, and some surprisingly important things just don't get done -- for example, there is no unified discussion of the language syntax. However, especially in later sections of the book, the examples are great and the writing is good. And, yes, it is 1000 pages for less than most other such books.

I have read about 5 books on java but the nice start that this book has given me is really amazing. Best thing about this book is it not a direct written book - it is a compilation of the best 4-5 books on the market and topics such as "customizing components", or events in Java are really good. Most other tend to confuse the starter - that's just the way Java is ... but with this book you get a clear start and you can concentrate later depending on your interest.
