This is one of the best books that I ever found for java certification. I gave exam today and passed it on first attempt. Author has done great work in organizing language concepts. The practice tests at the end of the book are excellent. Great book Barry !!!

I passed the programmer test on the first try, thanks to this book! My only sources of information where this book and the API documentation itself.

Start from zero Java knowledge, put in a few hours of study and practice every day for two or three months, and do all the exercises and practice tests in the book. Don't hurry. Be sure to completely understand the concepts before moving to the next chapter.

Yes, there are a few errors in the book and in the practice exams. You must go to the author's homepage to get the corrections.

The book deserves five-star rating, though I think it should have covered more thoroughly the IO classes. The programmer test hit me with a few questions I was not prepared for.

Well...as everyone says, the sample questions and practice exams are very good for SCJP exam. If you have experience in JAVA programming (5 months in my case) and go over this book pretty thoroughly (which only takes at most 2 weeks) you will pass the SCJP exam on your first try for sure. However, I kinda got lost when I started studying for SCJD. It doesn't really provide readers with detailed explanations about the concepts covered in chapter 21, Accessing Databases. At least to me it seemed so since I have very little experience in client/server programming. Oh well...after all, this is an exam preparation guide :) It has only about 40 lines of text explaining what JDBC and ODBC are, and suddenly brings up SQL. If those are really essential to passing SCJD exam, then I'm not ready for it for sure :( I would be grateful if someone suggests some books that cover, or introduce, the topics in SCJD for those who have little experience in client/server programming.

I used this book and was able to pass. This book covers almost every aspect you need to know in 1.1 test. However, in reality--that is to pass the test, you need to find more resources with good mock up exams. I found about 2 exact same questions and several similar questions in the exam from this book.

I passed with 78%.

Be warned, I wouldn't have passed the exam with this book alone.

Take all the mock exams you can find, for ex. the new 1.1 test.

Some questions on the test are difficult, and you will need to know your stuff in depth

Read as many books as you like (and practice!) to grasp the concepts of Java BUT to pass that exam...this() is the book for you. There are one or two typos, dont pull your hair out trying to compile them but the sample questions are worth every cent/penny! Good Luck

Nice book, the practice tests were good, has some typos, and one more good thing is that it has some contents for the Developer exam too.

I just finished the Developer Certification. I found the book to be a great reference for both the assignment, and particularly for the exam. Some of the questions on the exam I would not have thought about before taking it. I found I was well prepared going into the exam, which is a good thing given the short time limit.

Yesterday I became a Sun Certified Java 2 Programmer with the aid of this book. Although there are some syntax mistakes, I found the book well-written and the sample tests excellent barometers for the real exam. I would also recommend the Roberts-Heller book. Combined, they give a well-rounded, indepth approach to the language and the exam.

I bought this book for the practice exams. I found them challenging and reasonable with respect to the actual 1.1 programmer's certification exam. There were a few typos in the exams, but nothing that I consider major. I found the CDROM not useful. An automated test engine that presented sample questions, even limited to the two practice exams, would have been welcome.
