5.0 out of 5 stars Good book!
This book is very concise and very well written. In just the first 7 chapters that we studied in my programming class, I was able to understand everything that it said and start writing programs right away. None of the over-technical bs that authors use just to feel good about themselves.

1.0 out of 5 stars A book on how NOT teach Java to students.
This is probably one of the worst Java [text]books I've ever read, and there are quite a few bad Java books out there. Cay S. Hortsmann (the author) assumes way too much of the reader; he rushes through the material in short sections of each chapter -- and this is suppose to be a CS1 textbook, yeah right. If anything, this is a book on how you shouldn't teach Java to...

Written in plain and simple English, this is the recommended book in USC. Though this has are no particular flaws, there are better books in the market - the Dummies and Head First Java are much more enjoyable and engrossing.

Hortsmann (the author) assumes way too much of the reader; he rushes through the material in short sections of each chapter -- and this is suppose to be a CS1 textbook, yeah right. If anything, this is a book on how you shouldn't teach Java to college students with an overpriced textbook.

Avoid this book at all cost.

This book is in great condition, I use it for my computer class. Gives lots of information about Java programming just wish it gave more examples of writing programs.

Unlike most Java textbooks, this one actually does a reasonable job of downplaying the reliance on I/O and throwing everything into one method. Test methods are separated from methods which actually do computation.

(Two stars is about twice what I rate 90% of the intro-Java texts out there :-)
