Experienced Java programmers will benefit from pointed answers to more sophisticated questions, including: *How can I accomplish the equivalent of function pointers in Java, for instance, for use in an array? *How can I arrange for different applets on a web page to communicate with each other? *Do events propagate in the JDK 1.1 as they did in the older AWT event model? *How do the wait and notifyAll/notify methods enable cooperation between threads? *When will I be able to create a broadcast datagram packet? 0201634562B04062001

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

As the inventor and proprietor of the Java programming language, Sun Microsystems publishes a series of "authorized" books about Java, one of which is Jonni Kanerva's The Java FAQ. This volume solves some of the problems you may encounter when using Java in the real world. It's organized around language fundamentals and includes a comparison to C++ (with some topics centered around classes and objects) and Java enhancements such as interfaces. Experienced C++ programmers will best appreciate these chapters. Questions that begin "How do I ..." are almost always answered more usefully than those that begin with "Why can't I?" Later chapters look at Java events, both under the Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.0.2 and JDK 1.1. There are some useful tidbits here about unknown or unadvertised capabilities of Java. For instance, the book includes descriptions on how to invoke Java methods dynamically through self-modifying code and how to invoke CGI scripts with parameters through Java applets. Overall, this book is a minor, but interesting addition to Sun's Java series. Serious Java developers will certainly want to skim The Java FAQ as it explains some of the quirks--and limitations--of Java.

It is a good book, but need to be updated to include many new technologies developed in Java. I give it 5 stars but if you need to know the most recent Java, you should look for somewhere else.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book; "must-have" for serious Java development, March 5, 1998
This review is from: The Java Faq (Java Series) (Paperback)
Explanations are to the point and illustrated with examples. The coverage of "synchronized", "monitors", "wait/notify" are exceptional. An excellent desk side companion (another desk side companion would be The Java Class Libraries by Rosanna Lee and Patrick Chan). Includes differences of JDK 1.0.2 and JDK 1.1 as well.
