Useful to get started. I found learning Java to be quite difficult. This book helps with the basic undertsanding.
I did not get everything I need from this book, but good enough to help me making sense of what I read when I search for answers on the web.

I feel this book and some time and experimentation would be sufficient to learn on my own, if some of you are looking to do that. Kindle version was defiantly the way to go, especially if you have a laptop tablet. The convince of just reading it on your phone while waiting for whatever is awesome. So far so good, I still have no idea what that public static void main business is all about, but I'm not the only one. I don\'t think you can go wrong with this one.");

I am working as a post-doc at a university. I have extensive programming experience with GAMS, a special software to encode and solve mathematical optimization problems. As we increasingly rely on Java-based programs for data and result management of our GAMS models, I was looking for an introduction into Java. And as I am aware that many introductions into technical topics fail to take the degree of unfamiliarity of the readership into proper account, I decided for a 'for dummies' product. I am now one-sixth into the book, and increasingly ANNOYED.

The author confuses the task 'explaining complex issues in an understandable way' with 'dummies need my nerdish wit and humour to understand this software'. One might start suspecting that this is not really a book aimed at Java novices, but rather a collection of geek jokes under disguise.

Dear author: I wanted an introduction into Java that tries not to be hermetic. What I got is monument of your humoristic self-posturing which is hermetic in its own way. Very often I am an not sure whether you mean something serious or whether you are jsut joking or using irony. This makes the reading of your book ANNOYING! I just do not have the time for such nonsense. I will try to find a more serious introduction.

This book is a great beginner's guide to Java programming. I've been wanting to take a Java class for a while, but life has gotten in the way. This book has given me a much better start than I would've been able to get on my own. I work in application support, and as our team has started supporting more and more Java apps, it was critical that I gain knowledge in Java to do my job properly. I still a fairly slow at supporting the code we support, but I now have much more confidence that I can dig in and find issues in the code.

The main reason I like this book is that is approaches explaining things with everyday situations. Also, it is written in a way that I could read this before bed, I could be no where near a computer but still retain the information really well and enjoy the material. I knew other languages before this book, but I still feel as though this is a very useful tool to someone with no prior programming background looking to pick it up. Solid book

I haven't checked out any other Java books, but this one seems to cover all the bases. The only complaint I have is that some of the topics are covered on the book's website instead of in the book. Other than that, I have had an easy time learning a lot of good stuff about Java with this book! I would certainly recommend it to a friend.
