The book itself is very mall in size and at first glance it is almost shocking how thin it is. I was not expecting an O'Reilly Killer Java Programming book, but not something this small. The book in nature being made by an author who is also learning Java himself (or when this was published), is mediocre in content and is not about Java, although it uses java. The title is misleading in a sense. The book uses slick 2D (which is now under new management) to run you through some tutorials about game states and then how to implement them using this engine built on top of lwjgl. Overall the tutorials are decent although one can tell that writing is a new experience for the author and that editing and formatting were not done very well. If you are looking for some complete tutorials on how to implement some games with Slick 2D and want them in printed book form, then his is your book. Otherwise look elsewhere for game programming, and there are books that explain game logic much better. I do appreciate that the author went all out on his construction paper and printed barcode to include colored images of the applications and source code. It isn't too expensive and if you are starting with slick 2D, this would be nice considering the Slick documentation is somewhat short.
