Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Java How-To is a problem-solving guide for programmers with C experience and knowledge of object-oriented techniques. Each chapter tackles different aspects of the Java language, beginning with basic operations and graphics and moving on to threads, events, parameters, user interface construction, multimedia, and networking. The chapters are divided into sections, which are presented in a question-and-answer format. A sample question might be, "How do I create menus?" The authors answer the question with an example, then offer a step-by-step solution with full code. A discussion of how the solution works or what is happening in the code follows and the example concludes with any author comments. It should be easy to use the examples in this book as a starting point for solving real-life programming problems. The CD-ROM includes the complete Java source code and bytecodes for every "how-to"; the JavaSoft Java Developer's Kit (JDK) v. 1.0.2 from Sun Microsystems for Solaris 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, and Microsoft Windows 95/NT; the HotJava browser from Sun Microsystems; and some bonus third-party applets.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many errors and inadequate examples, April 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Java How-To: The Definitive Java Problem-Solver (Paperback)
There were errors in the code that a beginner would not catch in the first section of the book. Also, the examples given were too complicated for the topic being explored. (You don't need a 200-lined program to demonstrate using arrays). There are many other beginner books out there that far surpass this one. Find one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book to Java, January 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Java How-To: The Definitive Java Problem-Solver (Paperback)
Very easy to read and understand yet it is packed with lots of great code samples and useful stuff one can apply immediately. Was up and ready for java programming within 2 weeks and allowed me to buy more specific java books, such as java beans and java networking, for further enrichment.
