5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for a beginner to Java and Object Oriented Programing Concepts, February 25, 2009
This book is an excellent resource for a beginner to object oriented programming languages to get a handle on Java and the basic concepts of OOP. Even if you are a complete novice to programming or the basic logic involved (i.e. loops, if - else if statements), this book will be valuable to you, though you may struggle initially with a few of the logical concepts. The book starts with the basics, provides well commented examples and avoids overwhelming the reader by initially avoiding topics that are irrelevant to a complete beginner to Java and OO programming.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book - but you may need additional resources, November 11, 2010

Stephen Pellerine (In a bookshelf somewhere) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Java: Introduction to Problem Solving and Programming (5th Edition) (Paperback)
This book, on programming with Java, is very different than most books we own (unless you are a computer programmer). For me the difference was that unlike other books - with this one you immediately apply what you are reading, assuming you are using this as a course or learning tool. So, new to Java I was, it was simply difficult armed with "a" book. I found myself better off with a range of additional sources with a range of example codes and platforms to test my code in. Java for Dummies was actually great - but in addition to.

If you are new to Java (and programming concepts) there will not be one book that makes it all clear (I think) and I would recommend selecting a few books for the shelf. Just because we may not get things straight away does not take away from this book - as I feel newbies to any discipline will benefit from a range of sources, it just makes sense.
