Editorial Reviews

Review
“The programming examples are wonderful; there is plenty of discussion of analysis and design. The examples should go a long way towards teaching students about the importance and techniques of design.” - Matthew Evett, Eastern Michigan University

"My students this semester (using the Malik text) seemed to ’get’ variables and when to use them much better than my students from past semesters (using a different text)." - Michele Weigle, Clemson University --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description
Designed for beginning programming students, this book will motivate and excite while teaching fundamental programming concepts. Based on years of classroom testing, Java Programming: From Problem Analysis to Program Design, Third Edition approaches programming with a focus on clear explanations and practice, two critical factors in mastering the Java language. Straightforward language is used to explain the reasoning behind each new concept, and numerous examples and exercises allow readers to practice solving problems and writing code. This new edition is fully compliant with Java 6.0, and includes updated programming exercises and programs.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is horrible, February 2, 2005
If you wish to learn Java, this is not the way. This textbook presents the material in a convoluted manner, taking the reader from subject to subject with the all the grace of a prisoner being forced between barracks. Examples are vague and difficult to understand, which works wondrously against the book's objective of teaching Java. I highly recommend this book to masochists and insomniacs, those who either enjoy pain or have trouble getting to sleep at night.

A more-than-adequate substitute to Malik is the Head-First Java textbook by Bert Bates and Kathy Sierra. This introductory book is easy to read without sacrificing material, and will have you coding in no time. Not only is Head-First infinitely superior to the Malik text, it is nearly fifty dollars cheaper. The choice is clear.

1.0 out of 5 stars First edition is horrendous, December 17, 2005
Hello!
I own the first edition of this book, and it is the worst nonfiction book I have ever read.
For what it's worth, I consider myself an experienced (but not yet expert) programmer. I own several books on the C/C++ language, Windows API and VxD, assembly language, and computer science in general. This is the only book on Java I own, and it will be replaced soon!
If you are learning Java as your first language, or are not yet very comfortable programming, I strongly recommend you find another book. If you are attending a class for which this book is required, my condolences.
Another reviewer of this book mentioned something about lazy Wonder Years watchers - many students have problems learning their first programming language (especially if they're not comp sci or math majors), this does not mean you are lazy, you probably just need better instruction and more practice! I definitely would not want to learn my first language from this book. Don't be discouraged, I promise it'll make more sense as you go along!

1.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, horrible for more experienced programmers, February 27, 2008
If you're new to programming, then maybe this book will work for you. If you're an experienced programmer, don't bother with this text. Given it's now in its 3rd edition, it still has misinformation, and typos. Including the index, it contains 1055 pages, but only covers Java through basic OO (inheritance), some GUI, and exception handling. There is no mention of threading, network programming (which are covered quite well in Core Java, Volume 1 at a much lower price). By the time you've reached Chapter 5, the book is still discussing "control structures", ie: if statements, for and while loops. One would think that 315 pages of such is more than sufficient. The pictures help fill the book, and are nicely done. If you're just starting out, buy the book. But if you're wanting to learn what Java is about, start with Core Java instead. At about 1/3 the price, it's fun to read, easily understood, and will get you to your goal much faster.
