3.0 out of 5 stars Too much topics are covered but not deeply !!!!, October 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Java Programming With Visual J++ (Paperback)
I was disappointed by this book. Too much subject are tackled but not deeply. It is just an overview, a starting point about Java, HTML, Applets, and how to develop using Microsoft VJ++. The part concerning VJ++ is too superficial for mastering this tool.

3.0 out of 5 stars Obviously written by a C programmer, September 24, 1998
This review is from: Java Programming With Visual J++ (Paperback)
While Rinehart makes an effort at diluting dry content with a light-hearted approach, he often overlooks important material. His approach is typical of C programmers with little instructional experience. Although the book claims to be aimed at beginners, there are several spots where assumptions are made regarding programming experience. Also, the reader shouldn't be forced to wade through 84 pages of the book before he's told there IS a way to program a pause in the output to the stand-alone window (what a novel concept for a beginner to be able to see the output of his efforts!) Considering what else is out there, this may be one of the better J++ books, but beginners should look ahead from time to time, as important material is often covered after it is necessary in the learning process.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very well written book, March 17, 1998
This review is from: Java Programming With Visual J++ (Paperback)
This book is a definate book for beginners. Intermediate and advanced users should only have this book for reference or to go back over the basics.

This book does an excellent job with an intro to JAVA, and then proceeds to introduce you to the Visual environment. Syntax is stressed, and great examples are given. If you're looking for a first or second book, this is it.

The reason it isn't a 10 is because the book becomes slightly "dry"...a few more screen prints would help the readers "feel" like they were on the right track.
