The basics of computing and security, December 14, 2006
This review is from: Java Security: Managing the Risks (CD-ROM)
Security is an area that is woefully neglected in computer training. It sometimes is nothing more than a few words about keeping track of what diskettes are used. However, I have seen viruses on company and academic computers that took hours to eliminate. There have been several e-mails from co-workers with attachments followed by another with the plea, "Don't open the previous message, a virus is attached!" And with web surfing rapidly becoming more of a business necessity rather than a luxury, the risk is rising very quickly. This tutorial, an excellent introduction to the potential problems concerning Java, a primary language used in developing web applications, should be part of every computer users training.
With five sections and multiple subsections all hyperlinked for reference, it is possible to move around and follow any topic trail to completion. Since the emphasis is on the security problems, knowledge of Java is not necessary. Minimal understanding of the Internet is helpful, but not required. Many of the topics are animated for understanding and there are some video clips of leading authorities in Java security. Web sites for additional information are included and if your system is capable, it is possible to dynamically access the given location.
The level of the content is suitable for anyone with the standard knowledge of computers found in most business or college students today. It is ideal for any liberal arts survey course in computing because:
*) It is easy to use. It takes only seconds to show someone how to get started.
*) It introduces many of the basic concepts of the Internet and how programs are run from web sites.
*) It covers topics such as compilers, interpreters and bytecode in animated demonstrations. All of the fundamentals of computer use are covered.
Running through this CD-ROM should be a requirement for everyone using a Web browser. Even veterans will find some useful nuggets of wisdom.
