The cover is a little silly but the contents are great!,

If you have a few other "beginning" Java books on your shelf and they've not worked for you, buy this one. It is readable and it makes no assumptions that you know Java vernacular. If you have some innate programming skills but have never gotten Java onto your toolbelt, this is the book for you.

I've learned Java with this book by reading one chapter a day at my local Starbucks. I had to buy another copy of the book because my boss kept my first copy :)

a must have book,
By Christopher Bradley (California) - See all my reviews

I am a VB programmer working on a Java project. I was looking for a book that would not dump you with tons of information but focus on the real life problems and solutions. This book is packed with clear code examples. You won't find absolutely everything in this Java book, but it has lots of references to the Web resourses, should you need more details.I love the fact that the book weights so light! Get this book! It's a must have for any working Java programmer.

I liked the first chapter but the other chapters are two short and difficult to understand. The price of the book is too high.I have more than ten books about Java. I like Andy Harris's book (step by step explanations;all exercises work fine), Schildt's books (all the exercises work fine),and K.N.King's book.We need several books for learning Java, because no one is perfect.

Great book for both beginners and advanced users,

I have been using Java for more than 5 years and I must say that "Java Tutorial for the Real World" is really useful for both beginners and advanced programmers. It gives you good introduction to the Object Oriented concepts, Java language fundamentals, JDBC, and other basic things. At the same time, it is great in terms of covering the advanced topics such as Servlets, JNDI, JSP, EJB, JMS. Examples are great and well tested. Java Interview questions at the end also helped in enhancement of my interview process.

Excellent Book,

I've been programming for 2 1/2 years now in Java, and this book is what gave me my start. Before that, I bought all the Java books I could get my hands on, but I couldn't grasp the logic of OOP until reading Yakov Fain's book. Plain English, easy-to-read and great examples. I still occasionally refer to the book to try new things in Java (like Serialization, RMI; etc). Great book if you're a beginner or a confused intermediate! This book for you. It presents the Object Oriented Programming concept in a clear and simple approach. Examples are short, clear, and precisely to the point.

This book is a great source of useful information andrelatively small volume make it managable. I strongly recommend this book to everybody who is doing Java or just going to study it. It is written by very plain and understandable English and not overloded with special terminology. This book is very useful for those, who is looking for a job and have to prepare for the interview.

too many typos,

This review is from: The Java Tutorial for the Real World (Paperback)
The descriptions and examples were easy to read and follow. However,
I was dismayed at the large number of typographical and grammatical errors in the descriptions and explanations..apparently little or no proofreading was performing prior to printing. That makes me wonder: if there are easy-to-spot typos in the 'plain-English' text, how many typos might be lurking in the Java code examples? Unfortunatly it doesn't appear that there has been a any updated/corrected edition from the original 2002 printing. |
