1.1 in the title - 1.0.2 in the book :-(,
By A Customer
This review is from: Java Unleashed (Paperback)
I hope the book in question is the second edition and not the first. And the book itself, as a 1.0 book, can't be compared to Core Java's first edition - this one is much worse. Why? Well, even the chapters on OOP have serious problems. Let's take a look at an example: when introducing the 'Hello, world' program, the authors say the following: '...static means that the method is the same for all instances of the class..'. And they do NOT tell us additional information. No beginner will understand this and will NEVER be informed to look at this problem as the infamous chicken-egg problem. Only one chapter is worth mentioning: the chapter on threads. It beats even Core Java's chapter on threads - it just rules. Fortunately, as I've read, later editions contain the same chapter so reading them instead of this edition will explain everything about threads. One of the worst chapters is the one about exceptions. Even Naughton's very old The Java Programing Language is better in this respect... It doesn't even tell the user how the exception class inheritance and the order of catch blocks influence the ability to catch specialized exceptions... To summarize: do NOT buy this book b/c it only discusses 1.02 (the 60 pages on 1.1's new features (RMI etc...; no word is said about the new event model and Reader/Writer streams) have nothing worth mentioning; AWT and I/O is still 1.0.2). I'm an official course leader of Sun Microsystems Hungary.

WRONG VERSION -- BUY JAVA 1.1 UNLEASHED,
By almy@teleport.com (Tualatin, OR.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Java Unleashed (Paperback)
I wasted my money on this one. It says "Java 1.1" on the cover, however it doesn't really cover any of the 1.1 features at all. Foolish me, I really wanted "Java 1.1 Unleased". Don't fall for the same trap. If I bought this a year ago, I would have been happy with it.

AWFUL! AWFUL! AWFUL! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!,

This review is from: Java Unleashed (Paperback)
I have read over 10 Java books, and this is just miserable. It might be fine for teenagers looking to make scrolling tickers, but no serious programmer could possibly derive anything useful from it. Any O'Reilly or SunSoft books would be much better. Written by a zillion authors, the editors did not take the time to integrate the different chapters. Rambling, unfocused, and miserable. Do not buy.

The original AWT for Java is now outdated. Programmers are using the JFC Swing classes. Several chapters in the book are still relevant. "Part I Introducing Java" enumerates the abilities of Java including "Java makes Executable Content Possible", "Java's Design is Flexible and Dynamic", "Java Transforms the World Wide Web", "Java Animates Web Pages", "Java Makes Web Pages Interactive", and "Java Distributes Content". There is good coverage of the fundamental Java language, the Java class libraries, and Java applets. The best chapters are on network programming, the Java virtual machine, and Java bytecodes. For each bytecode, some brief text describes its function, and a textual "picture" of the stack, both before and after the bytecode has been executed, is shown. Good low level stuff!

More information had been covered but not enough,

It's cool. More information had been covered but not in detail. When I scared about java, Java Unleashed made me to cool. I can say "Java Unleashed is my Bible" because I had been undergone my project work by this Bible only.

Good reference, terrible CD,
By A Customer
This review is from: Java Unleashed (Paperback)
The book is a complete reference to the Java language, but you should be cautioned that the book focuses more on the Java 1.0.2 specs than the newer Java 1.1. As noted, some methods heve been changed, and they are a bit confusing to implement. As the header says, the CD is horrible. The files on the CD have been stored in the DOS 8.3 format (8 character name, 3 character extension), which is a problem since all the useful files have the extensions .java or .class.
The book is a good reference, and a great introduction to the "emerging Java technologies".

First I would like to say that this book is a great book and that it will teach you just about everything you would want to know about java, But... If you are a begginer I DO NOT suggest this book. It is a little advanced and even for me (intermediate) it is still some what confusing.
If you know some of the laungauge then this book is a must.

The JAVA Bible, if you will.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Java Unleashed (Paperback)
Like the name implies (unleashed), JAVA is the new untamed beast of the Internet. An animal that needs to run wild to be fully understood, and this book handles the hefty job like a seasoned trained ringmaster. To the novice the title can seem quite daunting, one might think the inevitable destiny would be of an expensive door stop("Boy that sure is a lot of pages there"). Not so, this is a perfect book for beginners because it gets them right into the role of "Beastmaster", and understanding this thing called JAVA is a snap. For the more advanced this a great reference tool, it gets into the JAVA language as a whole and explains the concepts beyond the Internet and applet programing. As JAVA evolves, so do the concepts, but JAVA UNLEASHED will not outdate. Everyone should have this on their shelf

As clear, consise and well presented look at Java,

This review is from: Java Unleashed (Paperback)
This book is aimed at the programmers who are already familiar with the object oriented paradigm. Each chapter presents one aspect of Java is a clear and easy to read manner. There are many examples given which help to visualise the "look and feel" of a Java program.
All aspects of Java are covered. The book also serves at a good reference guide once you have an understanding of the language.
Note that this book is not for the beginner, nor for people who have not been exposed to the object oriented paradigm.
